A gifted psychic but an emotional wreck, Rosetta Barrett is much more than a simple Criminal Investigation Detective seconded to a sleepy, rural English constabulary. She's part of the International psychic CID and also a high-ranking member of EPIS (Elite Paranormal Intelligence Services) a super-secret, Inter-Governmental, global organization, based in Dulce, USA.EPIS is tasked with dealing with the new realities of the twenty-first century – the rise of AI and ensuring robotic deep-learning doesn't lead to humanity’s destruction; alien visitation and cracking their telepathic communication codes; expanding psychic powers, including prophecy, in order to automate crime prediction and prevention. Also, Inter-generational Karma and time-travel, as they straighten out and atone for the crime generated wrinkles causing contorted disasters throughout history. When Juliet Jermaine's Olympic Champion horse Gothic, and its teenage stable-hand rider, are callously murdered, in what appears to be a terrorist-inspired road-rage incident, Detective Barrett immediately knows there is more to this than meets the eye and feels a powerful karmic connection to an old Apache Chief and his horse, dating back to the 1800’s. Gold-medallist rider Juliet, and Rosetta must unravel the karmic connection and also nail the present day criminals before another cycle of revenge and retribution is unleashed. The murder investigation takes first Rosetta and then Juliet to Southern Ireland, where they both fall for the devilishly handsome, Irish-Traveller horse dealer, Tommy Rafferty. Does Tommy know more about the road rage deaths than he's letting on and ultimately will he betray his soul mate, to save his tribe? Finally, seeking closure, Juliet and Rosetta find themselves near EPIS headquarters, around a camp- fire on the red-tinged, wide rolling plains of the nearby Native American reservation.........." Jill Hughes was born in Cottingley, a quaint little village in West Yorkshire, UK. Her grandfather Arthur Shackleton [was related to Sir Ernest Shackleton, the polar explorer - but the furthest grand-dad travelled perhaps was up the road to the men-only social club, but then he rose early and worked long and hard and filled the house with the amazing aromas of freshly baked cakes and bread..so could not be kneading dough and adventuring at the same time. Mouths always have to be fed, don't they and baking is hard, hot, thirsty work] Jill Hughes parents Margaret and Arnold Simpson lived with her grandfather above the shop, the house was large, old and rambling with a proliferation of attics and spider filled cellars, if you cared to look closely - generally the author did not, preferring to spend her time playing catch, hop-scotch and the like in the cobbled streets, catching minnows in the beck [a small stream] or swimming beneath the waterfall which is famous for fairies, after two local girls [Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths] photographed them in 1917 [Or did they?]. Subsequently the photo's proved to be fake, and this inspired a movie called 'Fairy Tale: A True Story' which starred Peter O'Toole playing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle [the creator/author of Sherlock Holmes.] He was taken in by the hoax, but then again to this day Jill Hughes believes in elves/fairies/mermaids/unicorns and all things Elemental and Other Worldly.
Authors Favourite box set : Game of Thrones. Favourite Movies: Star Wars, Independence Day, The Arrival...... Spirit of Prophecy....[Ha,ha- calling all film directors...?] .....What are we without an open heart and mind fired by imagination, after all?
Nearby to Cottingley is the author's Favourite Place: think Hovis ad's , steam trains, cobbled streets, try Tetleys real ale in Haworth, which is famous for the wild moors and the Bronte sisters - who wrote 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Jane Eyre' which are two of her Favourite Novels , along with 'Pride and Prejudice' [Jane Austen] and 'Gone with the Wind' [Margaret Mitchell]. Feisty heroines and fill-their-boots heroes, win hands down every time?
From her early teens Jill Hughes was a passionate horse owner and regularly competed in Affiliated junior showjumping competitions. In it's day West Yorkshire produced a lot of England's top show jumpers, true Northern grit we guess? Or where there's horse muck, there's brass! In her debut novel 'Spirit of Prophecy' there's an Olympic gold medal event horse called Gothic [aka Gothic novel's, a much loved genre] and his feisty owner/rider Juliet Jermaine. Age 17 the author wrote a humorous pony novel which was bashed out on a neon orange little type writer [thank heavens for Word Processors, spell checking] and bye-bye Tippex and White-out- some things disappear and are not mourned or missed.
Jill Hughes was blessed and inspired by two incredible English teachers,[ who back then were a husband and wife team] Paddy and Vanda, and thanks to Paddy, a brilliant photographer [a passionate, Irish man with big beard, bowler hat and rather eccentric black flowing cape] she developed a life long love of film as a medium. Later, after leaving school, she studied English/American Literature with Film Studies at the University of East Anglia [U.E.A.] Norwich, and subsequently an MA in Creative Writing at Surrey University.
Career wise, after a year or so teaching English abroad she accidentally landed a job in the City of London in an Investment Bank - how this came about let alone endured... this is still a mystery to all concerned. Later after three amazing children came along, she quit the City and headed for the Surrey Hills and trained as a Life Coach and Passion Test Facilitator, and went on to co-author a No 1 Best Selling Spiritual self help book called 'Inspired by the Passion Test' and in the vein of giving back all profits go to charity. A fascinating delve into the world of a psychic detective as she tries to solve the murder of a teenage stable girl in an apparent road-rage incident. Juliet Jermaine's Olympic Gold Medal winning 3-Day Event horse is killed in the "accident" but is there more to it than just road-rage? Psychic Detective Rosetta Barret believes there is a Karmic link stretching back to the Apache Indians in the nineteenth century that may be wrapped up in this modern-day crime. This is a page-turning, murder/mystery with plenty of different, exciting, arcs that include; Wicca, Aliens, Secret Government Organizations and good, old fashioned police work.

I found this book very difficult to get into. I usually give a book til the 15% mark to know if I’ll like it, if it peeks my interest enough to continue, or I know that I will not finish it. This book was a little to long winded for me. Rosetta works for the Elite Paranormal Intelligence Service. And receives information from a extrasensory database that prophets have inputted their predictions. Overall I’m having a hard time reading this book.
Spirit of Prophecy is a thoroughly entertaining book. It is a crime thriller with huge servings of science fiction and paranormal. Also, while the plot is crime based, the book as a whole left me with a positive feeling, particularly towards the end- when the whole universe was spread out before the two leading ladies and they are allowed to make three wishes each.
The thing that I liked about the book was that it offered many jig saw puzzles and in some places the author allowed the readers to solve these puzzles ahead of the protagonist. For example in the initial part of the novel, the heroine Rosetta Barrett is haunted by a nightmare. She tries to piece together her nightmare to come up with a clue. However, where she fails, the readers are able to solve this puzzle by knowing that something bad would happen to the horse Gothic. Still, the authoress is the expert puppeteer and she handles her characters well so that we are actually shocked at the climax and the various revelations.
The story is smooth and progresses at a steady pace through the eyes of different characters. Hence, instead of one know it all orator we get to know the thoughts of different people and their various characters are revealed in a gradual manner. As a woman I appreciated that most of the actions (positive) were initiated by the females and they were the really drivers who propelled the story on its track. I for myself greatly enjoyed the book and look forward to more such stories and if possible a sequel with the main characters.
I am not a hugr fan of paranormal or sci fy so if you are a fan you will probably love this. This was a cover request. It was gold and i wanted it. The summary sounded interesting as well but it didn’t capture my attention and I couldny get into the world and the characters. Since this is an ARC i wont judge to rashly on punctuation errors, but the amount of run on sentences was excessive. Besides the sentence runons the writing was good and the characters were developed but this just wasnt the book for me. Thank you so much to booksgosocial via netgalley for sending me an ARC copy of spirit of prophecy by j j hughs. This will be released on April 14 2019 All opinions are my own.

`Spirit of Prophecy’ written by J. J. Hughes is a mystery novel with a supernatural twist. Rosetta Barrett, a psychic detective, has “controversial” beliefs. These beliefs cause her to lose custody of her children amidst a bitter divorce. Determined to prove herself and solve the mystery, Rosetta embarks on a journey that will change her life forever.
Rosetta faces turmoil in her career and personal life. She sets out to settle old scores while simultaneously fighting to bring her kids back home. Every page in this book is completely unexpected. The plot moves slowly but smoothly and eventually all the pieces of the puzzle fit. Rosetta’s character is strong as she stands her ground even when people doubt her. She stays loyal to her employers- Elite Paranormal Intelligence Services (EPIS) even when the threat of losing custody of her children is looming over her head. Her courage and resilience is inspiring.
The book is written entirely in third person and this allows the reader to easily follow all characters while accurately gauging their intentions. While the reader has clarity about the characters, the plot is totally chaotic (in a good way, of course!) This keeps the reader engaged; until the very last page. The book contains profanity which adds to the rawness and urgency of the emotions expressed by the characters. In a way, it makes the storyline seem more realistic. This book has a little bit of everything: romance, drama, mystery, magic, and a possible dark reflection of a modern society when integrated with artificial intelligence.
Although there are numerous characters that contribute to the plot other than Rosetta, the whole story is centered on her struggles. Rosetta emerges as an empowered, fierce and a formidable woman. I especially love the brave female protagonist, who is independent and trusts her instincts, when she is confronted with a crisis. The plot is intense and forces the reader to concentrate in order to keep up with all the wild twists and turns.
It is hard to categorise this book under a single genre. Apart from its mystery and supernatural elements, ‘Spirit of Prophecy’ also has a sci-fi twist. This twist sheds light on the possible relationship between technology (Artificial Intelligence) and human nature. If you believe in the existence of supernatural beings or are anxious to know about the speed of the advancement of technology, then this book will hit you in a profound and, sometimes, in an unsettling way; with its account of the modern society, that we, as a race, have created.
It is, of course, imperative that you keep an open mind while reading this book and you will have to remember that this is a piece of fictional work. The book is very well written and grabs the reader's attention from the very beginning and keeps it until the very end. It is an exciting, nerve-wracking and a gripping read. It can be read and enjoyed by everyone, but I would especially recommend this to anyone who is interested in mysteries, sci-fi novels or supernatural thrillers.
I enjoy reading original books with colourful elements, which are unfortunately oftentimes suppressed and forced into one style or one genre. The author of this novel created an atmosphere that blends genres in a natural, and most importantly, meaningful way. I felt that everything in this story had its place and reason, and I could sense an important message behind the surface right from the start.
The story begins with a strange hit and run accident. Successful horse riders, Juliet her her friend Isabella are riding their horses, when all of a sudden a car chases after Isabella and her horse. The girl later dies in a hospital and the case takes on a mysterious turn when a psychic, Rosetta, begins to investigate not only the facts, but mainly the issues beneath the surface. Many philosophical questions are raised and explored throughout this unusual, visionary thriller. I was mainly impressed with how the author managed to balance spirituality with entertainment.
I also appreciated the author’s notes in the end, which were touching and wise, and made me believe that she has a lot to offer through her books. I recommend this book to readers who are looking for something original and thought-provoking.
Spirit Of Prophecy is an unusual mix of sci-fi, crime thriller and the paranormal.
Rosetta is a psychic detective, she has a nightmare that she feels is a message, a puzzle to solve. But the reader is privy to information she doesn’t have so you can start to solve the mystery as you read.
Rosetta is determined to solve a recent hit and run incident that may have been murder. Can she put an end to the relentless cycle of revenge?
She is a complex character with her personal life a mess, which makes her more relatable and likeable.
An interesting and twisty plot that makes this an engaging and entertaining read.
Thank you to Anne Cater and Random Things Tours for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour, for the promotional materials and a free copy of the book. This is my honest, unbiased review.
A little bit different reading material for me, but it was nice change. It is a brilliant story and pretty entertaining that kept me turning pages. It is paranormal mystery novel about a Rosetta - psychic detective that is fighting to stop a cycle of revenge on the Indian territory. All the plots, twists and turns in the story were brilliant and the main character was so good built with all her imperfections that was just perfect. I really enjoyed reading and I this is definitely not my last book by J.J.Hughes
Despite moving on about the tragedy that comes with the sole fact of remembering the past, nothing really is neither forsaken nor buried enough to no rise again, and the most tragic and darkest twist you could ever imagine will happen here. I like to make parallels between stories across several mediums, so I can easily compare this story with the series of videogames known as ‘Dead Space’, with the dark atmosphere, sci-fi elements and more, an eerie feeling that something is going to be horribly wrong is about to happen, this is a brilliant story and trust me, once you start, there is no going back. I give my biggest recommendation, to be honest I don’t like Star Wars, and the recent installments has just make my point clear in not waste any minute with the series, instead my attention is attach to stories like this one, which are way more compelling and deliver more than you expect.
Spirit Prophecy is a paranormal mystery novel by J. J. Hughes that turn out to be a very good surprise. The premise was intriguing enough to catch my eye while I was looking for my next reading. A story about a psychic detective fighting to put a stop to a cycle of revenge in an Apache Indian territory seemed interesting and I could only hope it delivers. And it did, even surpassing my expectations. This is a very good book, thought-provocative and interesting with all the needed ingredients to make you grab it and not let it go until you finished it. There’s crime, there’s a hidden agenda, there are the supernatural and also great characters. What I enjoyed was that, even though it follows a formula that is used over and over again, the story is fascinating. There is a strong display of background work and editing because the story never loses its focus. Very entertaining.
Audio:I absolutely loved this book! The storyline starts with an act of 'road rage' against two girls on horse back.Where we go from there is a tangle of back roads and probably improper relationships.Set in the near future,it is fascinating. Matt Addis was a terrific narrator. His voices were spot on.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
I was super excited to read this book. The blurb got me going. A paranormal mystery? Sign me up!! I am glad that I read this book because man, it was good.
Rosetta is a psychic detective and a witch. Used to people making assumptions about her, she tries to fly under the radar while solving her cases. The last time it got out that the police was using a psychic, Rosetta ended up losing custody of her children to her manipulative ex-husband. Rosetta is also employed by the Elite Paranormal Intelligence Services (EPIS). Her role with that organization is secret but she does tell people who her job is dealing with karma and past events. Juliet is an Olympic caliber rider who has lost her prize horse and best friend’s sister in a road rage accident. Juliet and Rosetta meet when Rosetta is put in charge of investigating her friend’s sister murder. Who wanted to kill Gothic? Can Rosetta solve the case? Can she also rectify wrongs made over 100 years ago?
Rosetta was a hot mess in this book. The author didn’t even try to cover it up. She was estranged from her children. She smoked too much. She drank too much. She was ghosted by her current boyfriend. Her ex was still trying to control her by how often she saw the children. She wasn’t respected at work because she was a psychic detective. The list could go on. I loved it!! I loved that she was so real. I loved that she was written to be as flawed. I also liked that she was honest about her abilities. That she didn’t hide what she was from people. She was very relatable to me and she became one of my favorite characters in the book.
I didn’t know what to think about Juliet. I felt bad for her because of what she saw. But, at the same time, I was annoyed with her. Her friend’s younger sister died and Juliet was more concerned about her horse dying. That was a big WTF moment for me. I also thought that she was selfish and way too reliant on Matt. She wasn’t going to screw over her best friend but Matt talked her into it. She acted like a child at times too. Like when she found the lipstick in Tommy’s bathroom. They had been together all of 2 days and she is freaking out on him. If I were Tommy, I would have run after that. But, I did like seeing that she did mature towards the end of the book. Again, it was refreshing to see.
I loved how the mystery angle of the book was written. I did figure out who was behind the death of Gothic and Juliet’s friend’s sister early in the book. But I was still able to get into the plotline because the author did a great job of keeping the hints coming. The red herrings and false leads were awesome. I did figure out why the road rage incident happened but was still surprised at how everything turned out.
The paranormal angle of the book was amazing. How Rosetta’s gifts were explained to how she became recruited to EPIS to what happened 100 years ago was fantastic. The author did a fantastic job of connecting everything together at the end of the book. I liked the past life connections that Rosetta, Tommy, and Juliet had to each other.
There was also a romance angle of the book. Of course, Rosetta’s past relationships were highlighted and explained. I felt awful that she was ghosted by Daniel. He could have at least called her and ended it. The whole quasi-triangle with Juliet, Tommy, and Rosetta was a bit weird and awkward but I got over it (as did Rosetta and Juliet). I was also skeeved out by Matt and Juliet’s relationship. Talk about toxic and dysfunctional. I did like Juliet and Tommy together. Rav and Rosetta didn’t gel well in my mind either.
I had mixed feelings about the end of Spirit of Prophecy. Mixed feelings because I was justified by how I felt about certain people in the book. I also was very satisfied with how the mystery angle of the book ended. I did a fist pump and said “Yes” when everything came together. My mixed feelings came in when Rosetta went to New Mexico to oversee something for Juliet. I felt let down. I wanted to see what happened. I wanted to see Juliet’s reaction to everything. I wanted to see Rosetta’s reaction. I also was let down over the fact that after everything, people still felt that they had to judge Rosetta. I am hoping that there will be other books with Rosetta in them. I would definitely read them.
I gave Spirit of Prophecy a 4-star rating. This was a well written paranormal mystery book. The plotlines kept my attention throughout the book. The characters were relatable and realistic. While I did solve the mystery part of the book early on, I was still able to enjoy it. The paranormal angle of the book was fantastic. The author did a great job of explaining things when they happened. I did think that the romance angle was a little much, with all the triangles going on. But, it did add some depth to the book. The end of the book was great but I felt a little letdown.
I would give Spirit of Prophecy an Adult rating. There is sex. While not graphic, it was still there. There is language. There is violence. There are triggers in this book. They would be the death of a child, parental estrangement and abuse of animals. I would recommend that no one under the age of 21 read this book.
I would reread Spirit of Prophecy. I would also recommend this book to family and friends.
I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read and review Spirit of Prophecy.
All opinions stated in this review of Spirit of Prophecy are mine.

Have you read Spirit of Prophecy? Love it? Hate it? Meh about it? Let me know!!!
An edge of your seat crime suspense novel that had me guessing right from the beginning who it was right up until the very end. I love the fact this author has thrown in the paranormal side of things without taking it to far in to the realm, and making it very relatable. I really enjoyed the story line and already recommended it to a few of my friends.
A fast-paced suck you in taunt riveting thriller. It starts out with heinous visions a woman is having in the night. An accurate representation of what I put in three categories: possible, probable & unchangeable situations you see ahead of time, usually not even knowing who, where, what, why or when. Why the hell you are traumatized with some of these without being able to pinpoint basics of the above I will never know. In the book the detective in question has alot more help with AI programs & inside intel of areas from maps, law enforcement & a global organization, an altered, better reality of the actual scenario presently. Once again though, when she tried to warn & bring in reinforcements in this situation, she is thwarted from all she could have accomplished. The victim in this case has some major flaws not just in choices but ethics & responsibility to those that have been entrusted to her care & is driven by her own ego. One would have thought this would have been a major life lesson she should have learned a while back. Ethics which seems to be an issue nowadays: is winning or advancing yourself in any way really worth betraying friends & being craven to the needs of those that depend on you? What happened to strong moral/ethic compasses? I was binge reading this all day & totally enraptured but took a bit of a dip on a bridge too far in a couple spots for me in last 100 or so pages. Much better than 99% of the romance type novels but then descended into fatal flaws I think of trying to add yet another angle group/personas. The author should have hired a consultant specifically of that group versed in both their history, culture & belief systems to even try to enter this story line into the book & it would have altered everything immediately & taken alot of the OMG am I really reading this feel out. I also think that she should have stayed completely away from any types or stereotypes or using someone "famous" or exploiting a group of peoples that have been pan created by outsiders in manners that they never were. The whole Native American & ancient evil curse is really manifested guilt on the part of Europeans over what happened here. The true evil was the invasion By Latins starting with columbus & his carnage & atrocities of the most gentle peoples on the islands of the east south areas off continent coast. areas. Then armies pillage murder & unspeakable acts [conquistadors, priests & settlers] after. There are over 574 federally recognized Tribes in the US & more that aren't or are off shoots. Everyone has their own traditions, beliefs & ways. [quotes from book partly from wiki then added onto]"The murders devastated Geronimo. In the tradition of the Apache, he set fire to his family's belongings and then, in a show of grief, headed into the wilderness to bereave the deaths. There, it is said, alone and crying, a voice came to Geronimo that promised him: "No gun will ever kill you. I will take the bullets from the guns of the Mexicans … and I will guide your arrows." To take a famous individual of a particular culture this way & change their words or manner of death to suit a book is to me very wrong. Most Apaches used grass huts made like hogans or yurts. Other nonnomadic tribes used the same including around here like the Wichita. That is my major beef & without it or even done with the help of someone that knew the culture & not a known persona would have given this book five stars in my review & really wished that someone around had brought this up as the rest was excellent & that particular vein of the book was beyond choppy including the story & the end where that story line would go which is really really regrettable for all the hard work & excitement throughout the rest of the book.
Spirit of Prophecy, a debut novel by J.J. Hughes was a stunningly unexpected surprise for me, as a reader. What I initially thought was a serial-killer hunt turned into so much more than that. When Olympic Three Day Event Gold Medalist Juliet Jermaine's prize horse Gothic is killed, along with its young stable-hand rider, in an apparent road rage incident, the search is on to find the killer. Was Juliet the target of the attack or was it indeed just a simple case of someone losing their rag over horses riding on the roadway? Enter psychic detective, Rosetta Barrett, who although working for the British police is actually, also a member of a top-secret research foundation that studies all sorts of paranormal, extraterrestrial and psychic phenomenon, world-wide. Rosetta is convinced that their is a long-past karmic link to this murder and believes she can unravel the mystery that happened so long ago to an Apache Indian, whose ripple effect is still acting on our world in 2021. What follows is a classic "whodunit" mystery that delves into all things wiccan, psychic, paranormal and extraterrestrial, all wrapped around the exclusive and wealthy world of three-day eventing, along with the rogues that inhabit the world of horse breeding. J.J. Hughes has produced an incredibly fast-paced and exciting debut novel that not only offers mystery and mayhem, but also give the reader pause to think about values, about relationships and about the impact of karma on our individual lives. What I particularly liked about this book is that it didn't allow the writer's obvious passion for these esoteric topics to impact too greatly, on the process of telling a good story. There is plenty of romance and no small degree of twists and turns to keep the most ardent romantic mystery reader engaged, but the addition of the psychic detective Barrett and her fascinating organisation, EPIS, lifts the story to another level and engages not only our imaginations, but our thinking brains as well. I doubt one can give a higher accolade to the writer than to say she has scored a bulls-eye on both aspects of this story. For me, the number one criteria in rating a story that is clearly intended to be part of a series, is - will I read the sequel? With Spirit of Prophecy the answer is a resounding yes. In fact I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the sequel to come out. The characters she has created are fascinating and there are so many questions about Barrett's alter-ego, as a psychic investigator that beg to be answered. Hughes has written a winner for her first novel and has ridden a faultless, clear round, in my opinion. This is clearly a new author to follow, with interest.
Description Are you a believer? Psychic Detective Rosetta Barrett has the highest security clearance with the Elite Paranormal Intelligence Services. But Rosetta can’t tell anyone what she does, not even her family. Her divorce from her ruthless husband was sheer hell. He’s a top Russian diplomat, and she lost a custody battle for her children Edward and Alice, because of her paranormal beliefs and supernormal abilities. For weeks Rosetta has been having sleepless nights, haunted by a horrific premonition. Suspecting what it might mean she tries to warn Juliet, a top Olympic event rider. But will her warning come too late?
My Review WOW - Spirit of Prophecy is one of the best novels I have read recently. It is engrossing, captivating and thought provoking. The characters are complex and very well-written.
The story starts with a quote "Magic is just science that we don't understand yet." by Arthur C. Clarke. Then you read about Rosetta in her room in the dark being spooked. You know already this is going to be one of those novels that grabs you from the beginning and does not let you go until the very end.
I thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed the fact that the author suggest in the end you listen to your intuition and trust that you can develop your psychic skills, your healing abilities and manifest your gifts.
This ARC was provided in exchange for my honest opinion. I give this a definitely 5 star!!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This story is a mix of genres - paranormal, science fiction and thriller.
The narrative is from several character's point of view and for the most part, is very involved and cohesive.
Rosetta works for a clandestine organization that works with aliens, psychics, seers and more to keep the world in balance. She is also a divorced mother of two children AND a detective in the UK.
Rosetta has visions, premonitions and she is trying desperatly to avert disaster if only Juliet would answer her phone.
Juliette is an Olympian equestrian - gold medal winner - who is looking to win a second gold medal with her amazing horse Gothic.
The mystery begins when Gothic and a young friend of Juliette's are killed in a road rage incident. Rosetta must find the backstory of the karmic reason for the ruthless murder of Gothic. Juliette must learn to accept Rosettas gift and her place in the spirit world.
There is betrayal, love, pain, joy and personal growth throughout the story. A few times, the plot slowed as the author spent - to me - a bit too much time explaining the organization Rosetta works for.
Overall., this was an absorbing and enjoyable read. I highly reccomend Jill Hughes book.
Rosetta Barrett is a psychic detective, but she can’t tell her family or the public. Then, when a young girl and a horse are brutally killed by an aggressive driver, and it looks like it was a deliberate assassination attempt, her skills are tested to their limits. The Spirit of Prophecy by J. J. Hughes is a mystery with a bit of a paranormal and sci-fi twist—well, actually, more than just a bit. It involves a centuries-old atrocity that took place across the ocean from England, in New Mexico during the 1870s, has alien visitors with unknown agendas, and pits Rosetta against her husband who, after divorcing her, arranged to keep her away from her children. I suppose I’d call this a piece of experimental fiction, given the fusion of genres. The author takes the reader through the story from multiple perspectives, and keeps one guessing until all—or, almost all—is revealed. I received a complimentary copy of this book. It was an enjoyable read that engaged me from the start. I give it four stars.
Spirit of Prophecy by Jill Hughes is right up my alley. A mysterious fantasy thrill ride that makes you want to devour the story as quickly as you can and leaves you longing for more. This is one of those books I immediately wanted to read again when I finished.
Jill Hughes has written a highly original crime mystery mixed with a fantasy/paranormal twist, which makes this story suspenseful and fun. I love the back story and the world building. I felt as though I was sucked inside the book and I was watching the events unfold in front of me.
The characters are relatable and what makes this story extra special. I love Jill Hughes’ writing. It is immersive, beautiful, and all around fantastic.
I’m a huge fan of Spirit of Prophecy if you couldn’t tell. This was easy to give 5 stars to. I knew from the first page I was going to love this book. Check it out!
5/5☆

When a horse and rider are killed in what looks to be a road rage incident, psychic crime investigator, Rosetta is called in: She’d seen it all in a premonition and was unable to stop it happening. Is it road rage? Is it an accident? Is it an international crime? Or, as Rosetta thinks, does the entire incident have its origins in another lifetime? This novel checks all the boxes for a fast-paced British crime mystery, but adds in a whole tertiary layer of government intrigue and paranormal links, including communication with extraterrestrials. Elegantly written and plotted, Spirit of Prophesy: The Psychic Detectives, Book 1, takes the reader on a fascinating journey, that occasionally digresses from the original plot, including author notes and the beginning and the end, which give a lot of the authors perspective on paranormal and spiritual elements. I found it an unusual mix of novel and the authors personal spiritual philosophy.
Rosetta has a gift, and it’s a mixed blessing. She’s a psychic crime investigator, and she sees things before they happen. So, they’re preventable? They are if the local police a) believe her and b) take prompt action. They don’t when Rosetta reports a coming incident of road rage, and the result is a child trapped beneath a dead Olympic-standard horse.
Juliet Jermaine isn’t likable, caring more about the threat to her Olympic hopes due to the loss of her horse than the young rider who died of her injuries, but J. J. Hughes draws a brilliant picture of a woman driven to succeed at any cost.
There’s much more to the story, which is set in the future – not too far, but enough for science to have progressed to an intriguingly convincing level, and the threads running through it are international, and many recognizable even today.
This book exemplifies the modern author's ability to step outside of the conventional categorizations of genres, mixing and matching elements to create a unique and satisfying tale. Much activity takes place within its pages: a crime to be solved, budding romances, visiting aliens. Each has it part to play in the cohesive whole of the story.
If I had one complaint it would be that I wish the various threads of the story were more evenly spaced throughout the entirety. Just as I was getting deep into the crime aspect, we're brought back in time to learn more about one character's involvement in a secret agency. When that completes, we're brought into the romance. I would have liked to have more of the searching for the killer woven through these sections so that part of the story didn't feel like it was lost until the end.
Nonetheless, the story is well written and enjoyable.
This book runs back and forth between a series of different genre. It is sometimes a detective story, sometimes paranormal, sometimes science fiction, sometimes historical and sometime equestrian. A horrific crime against horse and rider attracts the attention of a psychic detective. The investigation leads down a whole series of different paths. Past lives, indian history, relationship developments, relationship breakdowns, reincarnation, secret government organisations, aliens, conspiracy theories and more. It takes a lot of concentration to keep up, but it is an entertaining read if you stick with it.
This was a very thought provoking book that I enjoyed reading. What starts off as a hit and run accident that killed a both a young girl and a racehorse, turns in a paranormal type mystery that involves past karma and how it affects the here and now. I felt that this was original and well written, with the base genre being mystery. The characters are complex and well-developed and we learn about them as the book goes on, which really pulled me into the book, into their stories and was engaging to me as a reader. This is a complex story but well worth the read.
This Spirit of Prophecy took an interesting look at the spirit world and sort of a culture completely different from most of ours. The writing appeared to be thoroughly researched and cared for as the author delicately took the subject and presented the reader with an interesting story that both kept them drawn into this thriller from front to back.
If you are looking for a good read, especially as we approach October, this can keep you in the sci-fi spooky mood.
An excellent mystery, solid and well written. It's an engrossing and entertaining read that kept me hooked. I liked the style of writing, the well thought cast of characters and world building. I look forward to reading other books by this author. Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
So different to my usual choice of fiction, yet I enjoyed this novel and was absorbed by the storyline. JJ Hughs combines genres skilfully and with ease, the readability of this novel backed up by great writing. An opening for a sequel, I think.
A mix of paranormal, thriller, crime. It works well but I did find the dialogue a little naive and at times a little difficult to follow the layout of the story. Saying that, it's a really great idea, so unusual and it works really well. Look forward to reading more of Jill Hughes books.
