Halfsie #1

Rebel Rendezvous

Rate this book
Michelle can't remember anything farther back than two years ago, when she appeared memory-less on the streets. But when a princess named Elaine and her bodyguard, Andrew, kidnap and press-gang her into joining a war against a magical overlord she never knew existed, something tells her she's been in this fight longer than she thinks. Her first mission for the rebel organization known as the Rendezvous takes her into the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, where a temporal spell has kept witches trapped for decades and the laws of magic and Time itself are being perverted for the Royalists' gain. But Michelle, a Halfsie, only half-witch and half-human, doesn't know the laws of magic. And her ignorance may just come at a cost.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

Law has created an expansive and interesting world with a really cool magic system and an intriguing cast of characters. Although the first few chapters felt a bit slow with the exposition, I was really grateful for the background on character and world building they gave. It added much needed context for the action packed and exciting adventure that Michelle found herself in throughout the novel.
I adore the inclusion of long chapter titles, each with a humor that really captures the voice of the novel. Michelle's sarcastic inter dialogue really added personality to the story and was a very entertaining way to process and understand information.
The magic system was complex and fun to discover alongside Michelle. A significant portion of the climax takes place in a metaphysical/mental space, and the descriptions of these figurative souls and time webs were fascinating and easy to follow. Law did a good job of making an indescribable thing pretty describable!

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***
The character dynamics are interesting, and although Michelle does seem to catch feelings for almost every guy she interacts with, it feels like authentic crushes growing and not overly dramatized novel tactics. There is a line in Chapter 19 when Michelle tells Elaine not to deny her feelings for someone just because he doesn't fit into her idea of her future, and that it doesn't matter that they won't get married one day, she likes him NOW.
I thought that was a really important message. I personally had trouble allowing myself to have crushes or care about people because I was so terrified of any domino affect it could have on my future. I stopped myself from just accepting and exploring my feelings. Thankfully, it seems like Michelle takes her own advice, as she has an adorable little romance with Bobby while stuck in a time loop. I will say I was disappointed that we only got to see hints at that relationship. It's mentioned that they had late night takes to discuss the progression of the plan so far, in which Michelle remembered all the days put together, and even kissed. But all of that just comes crashing back to her in a moment and I wish we could have read it.

But that wasn't a relationship that could last. And I'm having trouble getting the pulse of the romantic relationships and what direction they will take. It's clear that Aaron likes Michelle but she doesn't seem to think about reciprocating -- except she gets jealous of any girl he spends time with. Michelle is definitely attracted to Andrew but she doesn't even think about getting between him and Elaine -- but Elaine doesn't think she and Andrew can last.
It doesn't feel like the typical YA love triangle (despite including the archetypes (kind life long friend vs dark and mysterious bad boy). I hope it keeps surprising me as I continue the series

*** END OF SPOILERS ***

Overall, Rebel Rendezvous was an excellent book! A great introduction into a very original world of witches and lost princesses and complex time conundrums! I definitely would recommend it to anyone who likes creative takes on magic, and high stakes drama
