Opening Isaiah provides what has never before been provided to LDS readers. It brings all important versions of Isaiah--King James, Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith Translation, Dead Sea Scrolls, and the modern New Revised Standard Version into comparison for readers to help them clearly see the similarities and differences in each one. Readers can thus study Isaiah's writings with a focus on the inspired texts themselves. In addition to beautiful maps that guide the reader through the geography of Isaiah's day, the editors have carefully provided guidance in footnotes to untangle difficult passages, point to important symbolism, and reveal historical context. This book may become the most important resource on Isaiah you will ever purchase.
Such an incredible resource for Isaiah. I went from thinking Isaiah was a bunch of mumbo jumbo, to having it be one of my very favorite books of scripture. The language is of course stunning, and the footnotes coupled with the NRSV column were a complete lifesaver with understanding it. It changed the whole way I viewed the words, and made sense of some of the tangled prose. I read all the footnotes along with the scripture, some were so good I had to copy them into my regular scriptures alongside the verses! Having the JST, DSS, NRSV, BOM and KJV columns all lined up next to each other with the differences clearly outlined streamlined it all and made jumping between them a breeze. It was even nice when there empty spaces in the columns as it made it a perfect place to jot down notes. I’ll be rereading this every year, added to my normal scripture study routine. A treasured resource for years to come.
I became familiar with Sis. Madsen's work through the many talks and presentations I'd heard over the years. This book has helped me so much to better understand Isaiah, as I can compare and gain a deeper understanding. Recommend.
