Director of the former Third World Centre (currently the Centre for International Development Issues Nijmegen - CIDIN) at the Radboud University of Nijmegen in The Netherlands for a period of 26 years. For many people, both in The Netherlands as well as abroad, he was an inspiring person. He dedicated his life to the worldwide cause of a more equal and just distribution of wealth and resources. He made out a case for less consumption and materialism. Being primarily a scientist, in his early years he was also an activist and he managed to combine both roles in his academic work. In 1998 Huizer was knighted by the Minister of Foreign Aid Jan Pronk for his longstanding contribution to Dutch development cooperation.
In 2001 the Gerrit Huizer Stichting was founded to preserve the spirit and commitment of professor Huizer. This is being done by means of the annual Gerrit Huizer Thesis Award, making Huizer's archives available to researchers in the Catholic Documentation Centre in Nijmegen, contributing occasionally to conferences, such as the celebration of the 35th anniversary of CIDIN in 2008, special projects and public debates, such as "Ideals in practice" in 2004, and an annual Gerrit Huizer Lecture (in progress).
