This collection of devotions is aptly titled Up to Jerusalem as it literally follows Jesus on his journey to the cross. There are fifty-five devotions beginning with Ash Wednesday and continuing through Easter. The first devotion is a miracle, the raising of Lazarus. The theme of one man dying to save an entire nation is brought up again and again in several of the devotions.

Each devotion begins with a scripture from one of the four gospels. The meat of the devotion is an expansion of the bible passage and additional information on the text. In some devotions the author provides background or anecdotal information. In others, he speculates about what could have gone on in the minds of those close to Jesus. Each devotion ends with a modern, real-world application and prayer.

Favorite devotion: 32 A willing Sacrifice. The emphasis of this devotion is how much Jesus loved us.

Recommended for those who want to jump start their devotional life with a refresher of familiar stories. It would also be a good family devotion for those with middle grade or older children. One thing I wish I had while reading this was a map so that I could follow along from town to town as Jesus made his way to Calvary.
