“Perhaps you were chosen for such a time as this.” It’s nearly Prince Aryn’s birthday, but before he can celebrate, he must find a bride and take the throne. If only it were his choice. However, a girl will be chosen for him. Trust the magic. Betray your heart. Amira is a servant, but no one can tell her what to do. Instead of finding a husband to free her, she spends her time gambling to pay her dowry and join the army. She was born to lead. After an attack on the castle, the prince flees with his maidservant, Amira. She will defeat anything to protect him, even death. Upon escaping the palace, they learn of a darkness in the kingdom. Magic is still alive. Together they chart dangerous territory, including an alliance with a pirate and a battle with the dead. Amira wanted an army. Now she’s started a war.
This author has a lot of imagination. I took away a star due to editing purposes. I loved the idea of the coin run society but left feeling I needed answers and feeling that this book should have been twice as long. I still wonder what Amira's coin said after it was put in the water in the first cave. I spent the whole book daydreaming she was going to go back and find it with a new destiny word on it. Also I want to know more about the coin system. So many questions but still definitely an entertaining read. I also fell in love with the fact that she says at one point that the ocean is salted with tears of drowned sailors the actual quote is beautiful and the idea imaginatively interesting.
This book has potential, but as a reader I just don’t feel like it is finished. There is a serious amount of errors that a basic proofread would correct. There are also problems with the events, plot line, basically magical things happening with no explanation. Even magic has to follow basic cause and effect rules. In other words, the magic that happens is not believable, but just seems random. I also was annoyed at the plethora of stories and phrases that are pulled directly from the Bible. I know people are inspired from many places and ideas can come from other works. But these were so copycat it pulled me out the story, I thought maybe it would make sense at the end of the book, but the end just left me shaking my head. I think a few more content edits could have brought this story to a much higher level.
