Denizens of Dump

Rate this book
Where the Universe deposits its rubbish. Stuck on the junkyard planet, Kellin scavenges, sells scrap and tries to buy a matching pair of boots. Traci is hunted by her former friends and current enemies. When Kellin finds her zipped into a bag, she makes sure she doesn’t tell him her real name. Forming an uneasy alliance, the pair set out to find a ship, fix it, and leave Dump. It’s not going to be easy, as everyone – including Kellin’s gang, his best friend, Trig, and Dump’s unelected leader, Mr King – is dead-set against the idea. Never afraid of a challenge, Kellin’s going to need all his resources to pull this one off. Seeking, but failing to find, a quiet life in Edinburgh, Rory Smith writes humorous science fiction. Denizens of Dump is his first novel in what he hopes will be a successful series. He claims his creative influences include Star Wars, Nathan Fillion and his pet rabbit, Luna.

Denizens of Dump is about misfits from all walks of life, with vastly different motives and dreams, coming together to escape a junkyard planet called Dump. It is delightful and wonderfully paced dystopian sci-fi that does not take itself too seriously. It is full of action and smart writing that keeps the story going, and the dynamics between the two protagonists were fun and captivating despite (1) them not knowing each other and (2) the reader not knowing them (one was literally found in a bag and even she doesn't really know how she got there).

I liked how the reader was (rather unapologetically) plunged into Kellin's and Traci's POVs. Despite knowing nothing about either character, we are slowly filled in as the story progresses instead of being slammed at the beginning with information. It makes the pace flow naturally, and despite being catapulted into an unfamiliar world (planet, really), I never felt lost. It's writing that leaves you hanging but never lets go.

The dynamic between the two protagonists kept the book going for me, especially at first, but the other characters (like Trig, Gail, and Mr. King himself) were a fun ride. Part of the appeal in light-hearted sci-fi is playing off well-known tropes, like thugs being dimwitted goons, but the book adds layers to each POV as time goes on, resulting in a complex cast of characters I could identify with (even if I do not necessarily agree with their actions). By the end, I felt like I was part of this misfit gang—I think if I were dumped in this world, I'd spend my time chilling with Trig. Or Anra, lol

This book has all the makings of a quick and fun sci-fi novel but also allows the reader to reflect on deeper social issues at their own pace (or rather, if they choose to). It presents a few political "what-if" scenarios without being in-your-face about it, so you can either (A) think of them on a much deeper level or (B) simply go with the story the way it is. Either way is equally enjoyable.

Overall, I enjoyed Denizens of Dump for its humor and light-heartedness (which is admittedly difficult to pull off in dystopian sci-fi, lol). It's a quick and enjoyable read, so if you're into fast-paced dystopian sci-fi, definitely give it a try.
