A fresh look at relationships between twenty-first century females and males.
In the twenty-first century, it is no longer just the battle of the sexes, but individual battles of the sexes that pose challenges to how men and women relate to each other. Battles of the Sexes helps men and women understand their own sexual nature, as well that of the opposite sex, and develop sexual empathy for each other. Leading young adult health experts Joe Malone, PhD and Sarah Harris, MS, RDN, provide insight into the mismatch both sexes endure between our rapidly changing culture and our inherited nature and the resulting battles both genders fight. Cutting-edge, yet understandable science is used to illustrate things like the effect of women's menstrual cycles and the chemical and visual laws of attraction. Malone and Harris lay out what motivates the genders inside relationships, particularly men and their relationship with women and women and their relationship with food, in a way that encourages sexual empathy. Battles of the Sexes illuminates how couples can recognize chemical dangers to their bonds and gives singles valuable insights for dating, empowering loving, lasting, committed romance between men and women that will benefit not only individuals, but also our entire species.
What I loved the most about Battle of the Sexes was how much it taught me that I still didn’t know! And it did it in a fun and relatively easy to understand way. I’m also glad it had the female perspective in that of co-author Sarah! As a young woman in her 30s, I learned a TON and not just about myself, but about my husband too. I plan on passing it to him next, so we can both have a little more sexual empathy and a deeper understanding in our own marriage.
And as a parent, I know there are going to be conversations we have to have with our kids as they grow, and things they aren’t going to teach them in school (which will hopefully change soon with the sexual IQ movement BotS is trying to kickstart). This book gives us the ability to talk to our kids about the science & chemistry of their bodies, as well as how that connects with their minds. The information in Battle of the Sexes is invaluable to those in the heterosexual community!! I can only hope someone takes Dr. Joe’s lead and conducts research/publishes a book for the LGBTQ+ Community too!
We as a species have evolved so far, but it was interesting to read just how much we are all still affected by biological cues & tendencies. The awareness alone I got from this book makes me want to share it with everyone! I’ll be making sure to notify all of our local colleges about this book, and suggest they add it as a valuable & much needed resource for their students.
I found this book to be one of the best reads, it gave me understanding myself as a woman and how men function. The most interesting being that apparently women can be sensitive to gluten and lactose at certain times of the “month” which makes sense since I’ve always felt like there was something that I was intolerant to but never really all the time.
My only objection is that I am a young earth creationist and the research and studies we referring to as a million years vs thousands.
Wow this was overall a really fun read. It gave me SO much to think about. I struggle with some of the conclusions because I don’t want them to be true but I’m going to sit with it and keep processing. There is definitely a lot of conjecture based on our understanding of evolution and such theories so I hold all of that loosely. Overall and especially in the last chapter there was helpful practical advice (such as how to positively affect our brain chemistry so we make better moral choices).
This book is a must-read for both men and women. As a woman, I resonated very much with the chapters discussing relationship to food, menstrual cycle, and the hookup culture on college campuses. This book dives into the actual brain biology differences between men and women, and led to a great discussion with my fiancee about the ways that we're different, and how those differences complement each other. There's so much information jam packed into this book - it's relevant to anyone who'd like to create healthier relationships by understanding the motivations of the opposite sex. If you're on the fence - GET THIS BOOK!! You won't regret it.
