Dr. George J. Becker (1908-1989) was a literary scholar and author known for works on realism and major modern writers, including John Dos Passos and D. H. Lawrence. He chaired Swarthmore College’s English department before joining Western Washington University. Fluent in six languages, he translated key literary and philosophical texts, notably Sartre’s Anti-Semite and Jew. His influential books include Realism in Modern Literature and Master European Realists of the Nineteenth Century. He retired in 1974.
