The end of the world began with sudden volcanic eruptions along the Ring of Fire, killing thousands and displacing millions. These natural disasters soon give rise to the kaiju; hulking leviathans seemingly immune to modern weaponry. Mankind’s final wars last only weeks. Governments are quickly disbanded, entire countries are left decimated, and our once great cities are now dangerous ruins ruled by giant predators.
In the Shadow of Extinction is a science fiction epic spanning 15 years as humanity shifts gears from fighting the kaiju apocalypse to merely surviving it.
The fate of the world will be decided in Part III: Humanity's Last Stand.

The final book the series and it doesn't disappoint!
This time we pick up not years later but instead directly follow the second book. If the second felt a little long (due to setting up the new world our characters live in) this one feels short because it moves from one thread to another with increasing speed. This could be seen, possibly, as a negative but when every thread is culminating in such an over the top awesome climax? Well, I'd say it was worth it.
The reason that I think people might consider it to have moved too fast is that it hints at "an answer" to the major questions (Just where the hell did these monsters come from?) but refuses to answer them. This might be disappointing to some but it was never the intention of the previous novels to suggest answers – this has been clear from the start. What it does do, and do well, is leave enough threads to the larger questions hanging for a sequel while also neatly wrapping up the questions relating to the characters we have come to love.
And love them, I have. We've been waiting forever for reunions, some with hope, some with dread; some arcs seems to implode due to the character's inability to grow; there are twists, heart break, confusion, pain, anger, and hope –
To speak plainly, this is a book that speaks about the human condition.
It just also happens to have badass giant monsters.
