The Church from Every Tribe and Tongue: Ecclesiology in the Majority World

Rate this book
The Book of Revelation describes a church from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation glorifying the Lamb that was slain. As the church expands in the Majority World and Christianity becomes an increasingly global faith, this vision is an increasingly visible reality. The insights found in The Church from Every Tribe and Tongue are not commonplace. Written by nine theologians and biblical scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America, each provide fresh perspectives surveying the most pressing ecclesiological issues in their various regions. The end result is a prescient analysis and constructive proposal detailing how the worldwide church can bear witness in a diverse and changing world.

(Ecclesiology is the study of the nature and role of the church)

Review:

In the recent book on Ecclesiology in the Majority World called The Church from Every Tribe and Tongue, editors, Green, Pardue and Yeo have solicited essays from eight authors who “represent the crescendo of voices from the global church who are thinking afresh about the Bible’s message and doing theology both from and to their own context… While they have each reflected on scripture and theology in relation to the realities in their experiences within their homelands, they present their findings as an offering to Christ’s whole church,” They, like “scores of majority world scholars have expressed their indebtedness to the Western Tradition, but recognize that it does not always respond adequately to the questions raised within their context and has sometimes overlooked important aspects of Scripture’s message. ” (Editors: Gene L. Green, Stephen T. Pardue, K.K. Yeo, The Church from Every Tribe and Tongue: Ecclesiology in the Majority World, Langham Global Library, 2018, pp1-2.)

I agree with Green’s assessment: “Their essays are fresh winds of God’s work throughout the world.” (Gene Green, “God’s Community in Majority World Theology, Ibid., p. 3) Since all Christians are members of God’s global church, it is important that we all hear the various voices who are emerging in the discussion of the nature and mission of the Church. But this book is not just a theological discussion of the church in the Majority World. It is a challenge to praxis in living out Christ’s role for the church and its mission on each continent in the world.

I was very encouraged to read the different descriptions of the Church, in Latin American, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. I am learning more about theological distinctions, and it's wonderful to see how local congregations learn to live and breathe Christ in their different contexts and yet remain biblical. I hope to learn more.
