Unhappy with how the mer city of Aquata is being handled by the new queen Anemone, teen mermaid Lorelei is determined to restore the city to the rule of the rightful long-lost queen. Using her magical powers and a mystical stone, Lorelei traces the lost princess to land, but instead of the princess, she finds a teenage boy. Finn is obviously the son of the missing princess, though he has no knowledge of his birth mother. And it is a good thing Lorelei arrived when she did because the charm his mother placed on him is starting to wear off and his mer abilities are manifesting at inopportune moments (like at school). Lorelei instructs Finn in controlling growing a mer-tail and magical powers, but with the idea of bringing him back to Aquata to take back control of the throne. However, Finn has a life on land, even if he has grown to possibly care about Lorelei.
It boggles the mind that this gem of a book has so few reviews. It is a wholesome, light, frothy, fun read for mermaid fans. And it has a good balance between mermaid scenes to teen drama on land scenes, rather than being predominantly on land or predominantly in the sea. Lorelei’s ocean terms to refer to everything were a shade too silly for my tastes, but they are reminiscent of the Disney Little Mermaid Ariel since the phrase of Lorelei calling Finn a guppy was lifted from the movie. So, firm fans of the movie will probably adore her terminology. And she really is a wonderful character. Her bewilderment of humans is endearing, and her determination is admirable, as well as I loved that she grew as a character over the course of the volume and actually questioned her resolve as she grew to understand the humans. As I mentioned in my review for the first book, introducing Finn in alternating chapters before Lorelei actually sought out and found him were oddly placed since it left us with following around generic teen boy Finn as he struggled with not getting his dream job at the dojo and attended classes and lived with his family and hung out with friends (he never did develop that much of a personality, but thankfully Lorelei was really the central character). The second book had all the typical clichés of an indie teen paranormal with a bully rivaling the hero, a romantic triangle, and the usual young heroine getting used to a different world, and even the clichéd training with new powers. (Honestly, I never got why the shop clerks in the book made a huge problem over selling Lorelei just a bikini top. They sell the bikini pieces separately here at pretty much all of the stores -not just the small tourist shops, but at Victoria Secret, too. The last time I bought a bikini I actually bought the bottom at one shop and the top at another). Though I cited the romantic triangle as clichéd, it does fit with the book since it hearkens to the original Little Mermaid story where the Prince had to choose between his bride and the mermaid. And the story also has shades of Princess Diaries with Finn suddenly finding he’s the heir of a throne and the concept of having to rule a city. As a warning though, this is the first volume of an obviously planned larger series and ends on a to be continued note with a villain appearance at the end. There are plenty of threads that weren’t tied off. It also felt like there was a chapter missing toward the end since the transition between the action to suddenly we were in the following day was really abrupt. Also the urgency of several situations that had been present through the volume until this point suddenly stops with no real explanation. The series had enough humor and light romance (and even action) to make me want to continue on with the series should more books be published.
