Witch Way to Amethyst Bay?

Rate this book
The three Bell sisters -- Holli Jayne, Gemini Katherine, and Poppy Lupine -- grew up in bucolic Amethyst Bay, Oregon, beside the Columbia River, under the bemused eye of their flamboyant Aunt Dorte, who has a knack (or is it a power?) for turning up at the right time in the right places. The women have become pillars of their business owners and social mavens, all with a touch of seeming serendipity and a lot of great food. Fortunately, they love to share recipes. But Amethyst Bay's tranquil surface is roiled when the girlfriend of the ill-tempered cheese shop owner turns up dead, and telltale signs point to one of the Bells. With the help of Dorte, handsome Sheriff Comini, and the strange, eccentric Paganel sisters, the Bells sift through the clues to find the killer. But could their hippie-entrepreneur and legendary paramour father, Hollister, be connected somehow to the murders, or is his long-ago disappearance into the grand river still Amethyst Bay's biggest mystery?"

Are they witches? An unanswered question

A really good read. Don't expect too much from the mystery as it is pretty thin and is just a background to the main story. The lives of the three young women and their eccentric aunt. Jackson had always made her feel that she was being judged and found lacking. When his obnoxious girlfriend is found dead, the surroundings seem to point at one of her sisters. Add in Jackson's demise and the girls are now uneasy. Was he really related to the Witch Finder General? Who killed him and his girlfriend? The main plot really is the lives of the girls, their working and personal ones and how they interact with others.

A whimsical, colorful fairytale about 3 witches and their colorful aunt. Gourmet wine and cheeses spattered throughout the book and the location is in the Columbia River Gorge. I have a tendency to read serious drama most of the time and this was a departure from the norm for me. The descriptive verse in this fantasy mystery puts you in an otherworldly time and place that brings out the imagination! A fun book!

Very entertaining, loved the sisters and aunty. The description of the town and food made me want to visit. A fun read!

Loved the Pacific Northwest setting. I would recommend this book to anyone young or old who is looking for a pleasant story that will bring a smile to your face.

Okay so I'm not really good with giving reviews and I typically don't because it makes me feel like I'm an authority on what is a "good book" or not. If you like this book, awesome! I liked it too actually, but there are some issues that I couldn't really overlook. Honestly, this book has plenty potential and I really hope that the sequel comes out and that it is better than the original!

Okay, so the good stuff. The imagery. Oh my god the imagery. ESPECIALLY the food. Fun fact, there are recipes in the book that I seriously want to try. Catherine really played to my weakness for food and the descriptions of food, and the way food brings people together are astounding, and values I hold high.

The imagery doesn't just stop at the food, but the homes, shops, and environment are all unique and at times immersive. Again, something I love a lot. Imagery is my favorite thing for stories.

I did enjoy the references of Bell Book and Candle. I won't lie, I had to look it up. The reference was obscure, but because of this book, I actually went out and bought the book. So, kudos!

At times, the dialogue feels real and the humor is, thankfully, up my alley. The bond of the sisters is of no doubt a powerful thing.

However, I can't deny this book could have been better. And I hope the author doesn't hate me for saying this as they have amazing potential and I really want them to keep writing. So...please know that I am saying these things so you can improve and reach your full potential.

Personally, I felt like the mystery fell a bit short. It was not the main focus of the story and it was only glanced at here and there. I would have liked more focus on the mystery, as the book hyped up the mystery quite a bit. It was an interesting mystery and the murder/crime scenes are creative for sure, but the focus felt lost.

Not only should the mystery be fleshed out more, but the romance as well. Again, it was glanced at, and that sucks because it could have been a really good subplot.

As a result, this novel can be hard to get through at times. The dialogue, while it feels real at some points, can feel flat and robotic at other times. And again, the mystery is not made the main focus.

All and all, I found this story to have amazing potential. When the imagery is good, it's stellar. The food will make your stomach growl and your mouth water, and I promise you may get a few good laughs out of it. The sisterhood is strong as well.

But I wish that the mystery and romance plots were fleshed out and given more focus, that way my attention for the story could have remained consistent.

Please don't think I'm sending hate to you, I'm not. In fact, I will buy the sequel when it comes out for sure! I know your story has so much more potential, and with a little more hard work, effort, patience, and open ears. I know it can be!

Thank you for reading, and please keep writing! <3
