I read this after reading Monty Robert's first book. I think it was his first and then became interested in the controversy surrounding him as different articles appeared in the news and then TV took a bite out of him. It seems Mr. Roberts is not quite what he makes himself out to be in so many different ways. I found Horse Whispers & Lies written by Monty's aunt and cousin to be a fascinating takedown of Mr. Roberts lies about his past "glories" and how he painted his parents as abusers. They would know. They were there too and they discounted so many of Monty's stories. The rest of the book is devoted to a history of Salinas, California and the whole thing fit together very nicely. Well done to the authors!

Great book title and subtitle. The authors asked "Did Monty Roberts Trade Truth for Glory?" then go about answering that question through myriad examples, all wrapped in bona fide proof.

They pick apart many of Mr. Roberts' claims of childhood trauma and abusive parents and the list goes on - things that Mr. Roberts discussed in his own books and on the speaker circuit. They then go on to document his various other egregious behaviors as well as his many fabrications.

And yet, within these pages, as told by Monty Roberts' own aunt and cousin, you'll also discover wonderful stories and history of Salinas, from whence Mr. Roberts' hails.

The book sets the record straight that Mr. Roberts' parents were upstanding citizens, well loved by neighbors, family and friends.

The book gets a bad rap by Monty Roberts' many supporters who have stated publicly that they don't care if he made things up (or how much) because his ultimate message to be kind to horses is too important.

That is a very skewed outlook.

You can enjoy this book as much for the history as for exposé elements.

I loved this book. Not only did it address the many tall tales of horseman Monty Roberts but it did so in an entertaining and informative way especially in how it dealt with the question of Monty's parents whom he claims abused him. Ridiculous! It is well organized and well written by Monty's cousin and aunt. Monty's brother and many of the other relatives commented, all of which proves that Monty Roberts lied in his own book. Sad but true.

Monty Roberts' own story as told in "The Man Who Listens to Horses" has been dismissed as largely fictional by his family members in THIS book "Horse Whispers and Lies" by people who know how to tell the truth and document it thoroughly. I applaud their courage for taking on a man dubbed an "icon" by the horse world, many of whom are misguided souls who think falsifying the truth is okay. It's not and the authors of "Horse Whispers and Lies" lay that out very well. All animals (including horses) should be treated with respect at every point in their lives. I think that's a message all intelligent people can get behind. Monty Roberts did not invent the sentiment. That message is a good one and I'm glad he at least got one thing right.

THIS book, however, goes into so much more and it's very interesting how the authors segue between Monty and the history of his times as they directly applied to him.

Much like other reviewers, I read this book after reading Monty Roberts' first book (I think it was his first - "The Man Who Listens to Horses") and I truly felt betrayed by what Monty was writing and lying about. This book is so much more interesting, and that coming from a rider and horse lover! I loved the stories and the historical facts. I think the authors (who are also related to Monty) did a great job.
