I read this for a class, and though it had some helpful insights in terms of developing and implementing a vision for ministry, I find it to be a bit lacking in theological foundations. The book aims to teach pastors and leaders develop a compelling vision, but much if not most of the language is taken from leadership gurus and pop-psychology rather than exegesis. Even the Scripture that is given is often interpreted through a "leadership lens" rather than teaching us how to pastor well as undershepherds serving our Lord.
Not bad, but very 1990's CEO style of leadership for senior pastors type book. Of course there are several timeless principles in here, but nothing that couldn't be gleaned from any leadership blog in a much more relevant and condensed form.
I'd skip it for another leadership book if you are considering it for a staff read.
this book was very helpful for me to think about what i am trying to do with my life. it allowed me space and structure to think about what i truly want in life and a practical way of not letting it go.
Read this while serving as community outreach director at Church of the Valley and serving as board president with Habitat for Humanity. There are useful worksheets, and a narrative of moderate inspiration.
