We are always being told to eat a Mediterranean diet, so why not plant a garden to go with it. This type of garden, full of colour and bees buzzing happily around, is especially suited to the climate where I live in Australia. As it is a dry continent, we don’t waste water. We need tough drought-resistant plants that can survive, and a Mediterranean style garden lends itself to both economy and beauty. While most gardens need fertiliser to prosper, the gardens described in this beautifully-photographed book use stones to create a free form meandering path in and around the plants. There are ideas for creating terraces which are particularly useful if you have a sloping block of land. Depending upon space, you could plant grape vines or olive trees, or simply plant layers of trailing plants and allow them to tumble over walls and each other. There are many local plants that look and behave like their Mediterranean cousins and these are listed in the book. If you don’t have room for an outside garden, you could plant a miniature in a trough or create a dappled leafy retreat under a vine-covered pergola. The Mediterranean garden can be created on a budget with herbs, bulbs, succulents, fruit, vegetables and edible leaves to provide a feast for the eye and the table.
