These lovely dogs with large dark eyes and flowing coat can capture the heart. First mentioned by Chaucer in 1340, they may have originally come from Spain, where the name "Spaniel" became attached to them. They were used to hunt game before guns were used. Using a hawk to send small game into the cover of brush, where the dogs would creep close and get the attention of the game. The hunter would throw a net over game and dog alike.
