Emily Eden can figure out what other people want and need within ten minutes of meeting them. After almost seven years of working in human resources, she has become very good at reading people. But she has no idea what she wants. All she knows is that her entire life feels like it's a size too small.
When her boyfriend of eight years proposes to her, she turns him down even though she knows he’s a great catch. Nine months later, she is single, unemployed, and on vacation. Thanks to missing a ferry, she gets stranded on a remote Greek island where she runs into a charming Englishman who, just like Emily, is at a crossroads in life.
In a place that seems too good to be true, Emily starts to build a new life for herself. Things she never knew she wanted are suddenly within her reach. But will she find the courage it takes to make a grab for them?
Sofia Ellis loves sunny summer days, books and movies that end with the promise of happily ever after, and, above all, spending time with her family. She also enjoys drinking coffee while writing. Without the invigorating powers of caffeine, she wouldn't get much done.
4.5 stars A size too small is Emily's journey to finding herself and where she stands on this planet. The blurb sums up perfectly the first couple chapters of the book and Emily's journey begins when she steps foot in Nisi, which is a Greek island. There she meets new people and forms everlasting relationships with them. The secondary characters were all great and warm people. I loved the people of the island and how each one helped Emily in some way. After a while, we have new arrivals on the island, which got me very worried about the place where the author wanted to take the story, but everything turned out well and I was very happy and satisfied with the result. Emily's relationship with Liam needed some work in my opinion. It was a secondary plot and not on the focus as much as I feel that it should have been. Maybe her bonds with other people (not romantically speaking) were more important since this is not so much a romance book as it is women's fiction. I am more of a romance reader, so I always have some problem with this genre because the romance is not the main plot. As a Greek, I had a problem with only two words used. The rest of the staff were good and correct, which made me wonder why the author decided to use the words nisi and chorio for the name of the island and the village respectively. Every single time I read those words, I got a WTF thought. The words were not bad, but the meant Island and village, which is weird. I can understand why the author didn't want to name a specific island and that's why I am not too harsh about it. The book is a complete stand-alone and it can be read as that, but you should know that the author has published two other books which are the stories of Emily's friends whom we met in the prologue. You might want to pick these first because of the chronological order. I wasn't read them and I was surprised to find out that they existed.
I first met Emily in Trying New Hats, the first book that I read from this author. I always seem to enjoy books that incorporate characters from previous books by the same author. Emily has gone in search for what has been missing in her life in the past. She ends up in Greece, and falls in love with the small island and the people that she encounters there on a daily basis. Sofia Ellis certainly has a way of pulling you into the storyline and keeps you wanting more. This was another excellent book, and I don't think anyone that picks it up to read will be disappointed with the story or the author.
In a word... charming. This is my first book by Sofia and girl - you smashed it! I believe from my friends on here that Emily Eden features in other of Sofia’s books so that will be enjoyable as I will definitely be reading another. ‘A size too small’ is fun, interesting, fast paced and is set in a perfect idyllic Greek setting. I won’t give any spoilers but there are several unexpected twists and turns, all of which I loved. Good characters - Liam is my favourite. Recommended.
What a little cracker of a read. I found it a bit different but in a good way. In this story we meet Emily who after being stuck in the same job for a long time, she decides to bite the bullet and ends up on a Greek Island, que a handsome guy, a bit of romance and willing Emily to get the life she deserves. A lovely story that is well worth a read. This is an author I certainly want to read more of.
