Viola Bayley was a British writer of adventure stories for children.
Viola Clare Wingfield Powles Bayley was the daughter of Isabel Grace Wingfield and Lewis Charles Powles. She was educated at Effingham House, Behnke Drama School, and Licenciate of the Guildhall School of Music, preparing for a career on stage.
Her uncle was a high court judge in Lahore, India, and it was on a visit to him in the winter of 1933 that Viola met her husband Vernon Thomas Bayley (C.M.G., O.B.E.) of the Indian Police. They spent some years living and traveling in India. During WWII Viola worked in the RAF cipher offices in Delhi and then as private secretary to the Governor’s wife.
Viola's husband joined the Foreign Office and thus began years of postings and travel to various destinations she used as settings for her books. She also wrote for the Children’s Club and other magazines.
All of Bayley's books are stand alone stories, but some of them feature the same characters to form mini series, such as the four Marriott books and the two Wycliffe family stories. Paris Adventure introduces the Marriott family. The Wycliffe family & Miss Carmichael are introduced in The Lebanon Adventure.
