Aster’s story is a cute story about the animal food chain. Not only that but it explains sad stories of just how bad humans have gotten of late. It’s a cute story that brings up important and big things. My heart hurt for the poor animals. A good story for young kids and even older adults to show them just how bad we can be sometimes. Glad I had a chance to read this amazingly short and meaningful story.

Allie Compeau’s Aster The Spirit Talker is perfect for fans of series like Simon Thorn, Bearhaven, Spirit Animals and Fablehaven. And because “Aster” is not as long as those books, it might fit the bill nicely for students who WANT to read those series, but have not yet developed the attention span needed in order to tackle them. The story of Aster’s ability to talk with animals and help them connect with humans in a way that is beneficial to all does not spend much time at all getting right into the action. Aster barely has time to tour her first permanent home and see the treehouse built by her newly retired military dad before Poe, Hamilton, and Atticus (a bird, a groundhog, and a badger) have shown her the not so visible meeting place within its trunk and helped her to listen with her heart in order to listen to them. From there, the pace moves even faster as she meets other animals and tries to understand her role as the Guiding Spirit and to stay alive as some animals, opposed to reunited humans with the animal kingdom, attempt to silence her...permanently. Once I got past an overuse of fluffy adjectives used to describe Aster’s perfect new home and bedroom in the first few pages, the book resounded within my librarian brain and I immediately knew that it would have a place in the hands of my lovers of animal-fantasy on my 4th and 5th grade campuses. Recommended without any warnings for possible content “red flags” for grades 4-6. Thanks for the dARC, Allie!

Aster The Spirit Talker: A Middle Grade Fantasy is a fantasy novel for children and preteens written by Allie Compeau. Aster was all sorts of excited and just a little bit scared about her family’s move to their forever home. Her dad was in the military, so she had grown up never being in one place for very long. This would be different. Her father had retired from the military and would be a commercial pilot, and the house they would be living in was theirs. When they arrived, Aster marvelled at the architecture of the new house -- it was so much like the fairytale cottages she envisioned while reading her books! Then she saw the backyard -- it was huge and filled with lush greenery and flowers. And, looking up, she saw geese honking overhead, and she was thrilled when her dad said that he had seen deer in the yard when he first saw the house. Going inside, Aster’s bedroom was perfect; the lavender tones of the walls and furnishings made her smile, and the view from the large picture window facing out on the backyard and the woodlands beyond it was mesmerizing. But Aster’s sparkling new world was soon to get even better and brighter.

Allie Compeau’s fantasy novel for children and preteens, Aster The Spirit Talker: A Middle Grade Fantasy, is a marvelous tale about a sheltered ten-year-old girl whose move to a new house is world-changing. I loved watching as the timid and insecure Aster grows into a strong and daring young heroine, one who learns that fear is normal, but acting in spite of your fear is bravery. Aster’s animal companions are a treat to get to know, and the work they do helping her prepare for her role in saving the planet makes for a grand story. Compeau’s plot is exciting and fast-paced with plenty of pitfalls and villains to make readers wonder if Aster will even survive, and her characters are credible and well developed. Allie Compeau’s animal-oriented epic fantasy for kids is well worth a read, no matter what your chronological age. Aster The Spirit Talker: A Middle Grade Fantasy is most highly recommended.

Sometimes it would be nice to be a kid again: carefree, innocent, and seeing the world for its true beauty. Some would say now more than ever we need this escape, and I tend to agree. Author Allie Compeau captured this sentiment perfectly for me in her middle-grade fantasy, “Aster the Spirit Talker.”

Through the eyes of her main character, ten year old Aster (with a new-found gift to speak with animals), the reader is reminded to “Close your eyes. Quiet your mind. Open your heart” to the surrounding world. Compeau portrays a natural world in disarray, teaching a valuable lesson to young readers that our actions, even our day-to-day tasks, have far-reaching consequences to our planet. This dire circumstance becomes an engaging adventure that places Aster, alongside her new animal friends, against other members of the animal kingdom set to reap revenge against the humans that marred their landscape. Compeau creates an ensemble of unforgettable characters that will endear themselves to young and older readers alike, all the while striving to re-establish the human role in safeguarding the natural order.

“Aster the Spirit Talker” is a fascinating and powerful story. It has found a permanent home on our kids’ bookshelves, and has also earned the affections of our nephews and nieces. I’m looking forward to sharing more adventures with Aster and her friends, and reading more of Compeau’s imaginative storytelling.

I have read this book...twice. Allie Compeau is a brilliant storyteller and her natural wit and humor shine through the pages of this adorable middle-grade adventure! Aster Finlay is an adorable, loveable, and very relatable young girl who discovers something about herself that will not only change her own world but the world around her. Compeau creates a fantastical world full of unique and well-rounded characters, from Aster's parents to the animals in the forest behind her new house. This is a quick, fun, and enjoyable read that parents MUST share with their children of all ages. But be warned, parents just may wind up reading it themselves to find out what happens to Aster in this new world she has discovered, as it's easily the kind of book that draws you in and pulls you deep into its world so that you find it impossible to put down to the very end. I will be buying this book for my nieces and nephew, and any other parent I know who has small children that need to experience Aster and her adventure for themselves.

Wonderful storyline for the age group

Allie Compeau's lovely story of a young girl communicating with nature in a way that she never thought possible. The adventure starts with a move to a new home, and amongst settling in, a miraculous transformation occurs when she opens her heart to her surroundings. Characters that you can visualize, associate and care about, assist Aster in her magical story of self discovery, responsibility, bravery and friendship. A story that can be truly enjoyed and shared by all the family.

Aster The Spirit Talker is a wonderfully written young adult fantasy novel. Ms. Compeau has added just enough of her own personality in the main character to give her a more "fleshed out" and real feel. The story itself is a grand tale of good vs. evil and it kept me turning page after page in anticipation. I highly recommend this and look forward to more from Ms. Compeau.

This book was a fun book to read that left me wanting more, but not in a bad way. I can't wait to read the continuing saga of Aster. Kids can learn valuable lessons from the well-written story. Heck, I even learned what a damselfly was.

Sweet tale

A lovely story of a lonesome little girl and the creatures she befriends. Plenty of dialog makes this a wonderful read-aloud bedtime story.
