Reviewing Books 1 and 2 at Once This is basically because they are part of the same story, and a timely one it is, too. In 2064, The United States has survived another Civil War, this one referred to as Civ-2, and several states (mostly the "red states" have broken up into smaller states to try to gain more power in Congress. Also, there are no longer two major political parties, but "Leagues", and the ones with the most power (and the biggest Sponsors) win the elections. In 2064, the current president is Acton Granger, hitherto the governor of North Dakota, who has won without a running mate and pledged to name the next highest vote-getter, who happens to be Elijah Schroeder, of the Conservative League, his vice-president. This has gone along reasonably well until 2064's election cycle. At a rally on Ellis Island where the first legal immigrant since before Civ-2 is scheduled to receive his legal citizenship, there is an attempt on the President's life by someone using something they call Weaponized Light. This kills the immigrant, a renowned doctor, seriously damages the Statue of Liberty, and wounds or kills a number of others. While it does not kill the president, he collapses several days later and is in a coma at Walter Reed Hospital. At the same time, the book focuses on other characters, notably Shelby Monroe, the governor of Greater Texas, a candidate of the Freedom League, and her five daughters, known collectively as the Boot Squad; a Black videographer named Jamie who travels with them; Joshua Cromwell, another candidate of the Freedom League, who is guided by a mysterious internal Voice (and who reminds me of Josh Hawley); and Tess Sinclair, daughter of a former candidate from the Conservative League, who is carrying on her father's dream of a Constitutional Convention to revise/rewrite our national document. All in all, it's a fascinating, if slow, read...but it's not finished. Apparently Book 3 is on its way, which is a good thing, since the story isn't done yet! We don't know who wins the election....
Book Two picked right up where we left off and kept running. The recap in the beginning helps the reader become re-immersed in 2064 right away. The author then takes us on another adventure into the futuristic world he’s created. It’s a journey that’s highly entertaining, continually surprising, and eerily pertinent to today’s political world. Books 1 and 2 are definitely strongly recommended and looking forward to Book 3!
