I am deeply enjoying this book. Art from around the world, diverse perceptions and insights in Christ... it is a refreshing demonstration that Jesus is not just for a Western audience, and means many things to different people and cultures. this is a great devotional and reflection tool for me to meditate on the art and in the interesting reflections and writing that goes along with it.
Absolutely lovely book depicting art from the 12th c to the 21st c representing the various stages of Jesus' life, death and resurrection with well set out stories to support the paintings by various authors and editor Ron O'Grady. My favourite works are Owade's The Thorn Bush,(120) Kathe Kollwitz's Pieta (133) and Blake Debassige's Tree of Life(93) My favourite lines: "Communication through art transcends national and linguistic boundaries" (8); sadly "It is no secret that, despite the nominal numbers, the mainline churches are depleted. Our art reflects this." (29); "Lowered eyes with eyelids half closed, in Buddhist iconography....represent self-knowledge, compassion, empathy, humility and wisdom" (32); "Art extracts and distils meaning from ordinary human experiences. it is so because art treats ordinary experience as an end in itself" (66); "the meal of celebration that sustains the church is one which gives birth to the fullest expression of community" (102); "Art is a process of being, not a result or an achievement" (141)
