This book tells the story of a woman, Brigitte, who grew up in Hitler's Germany during the war years. She was bright and thoughtful, enjoying a privileged childhood full of friends, art, and music. The war brought experiences of country living and more colorful personalities. After the war she married a French-American man and together they began a family in America. They moved frequently and Brigitte became intellectually and socially restless. She studied to earn degrees and became a teacher. Brigitte came to embrace the counterculture, the Woman's Movement, and causes of the underprivileged. She eventually became devoted to an Hindu-inspired spiritual community and a guru. Then known by the name Malini, she spent ten years in India helping to maintain an ashram while she deepened her spiritual self. Returning to the US, she taught for many years as she fostered further friendships and enjoyed her adult children and grand-children. This path from the stern structure of Nazi Germany to free-thinking spiritualism is a moving account by a highly educated and deep-feeling woman of many backgrounds.
