The Chalam Færytales #2

The Purloined Prophecy

"She was the one believed to fulfill the prophecies, you see. She was the long-awaited one. That is why she was killed, no doubt. And that is why there are those who swear she lives."

******

A single kiss saved their fabled love. But the same magic that saved them might also destroy them.

Prince Ferryl knows that war is coming for the kingdom of Navah. It doesn’t help that he is betrothed to the niece of the enemy king. But now that Ferryl’s memories of the love of his life Elizabeth have been restored, the real questions begin: Who has magic? Who is using it against them? And who is Elizabeth, really?

When a dying prophet insists the answers to their questions lie in the peaceful kingdom to the north, Prince Ferryl and Elizabeth—with the help of a few friends—set off on a journey to the mountains in search of an absolution that will save the kingdom—and hopefully their love once and for all.

But a prophecy long-since forgotten awaits them—and an unexpected twist of fate may damn their love forever.

The Purloined Prophecy is the second book in the highly-acclaimed Chalam Færytales series. Packed with page-turning mystery, breathtaking imagery, and swoon-worthy romance, this epic færytale will enthrall readers from the very first page.

I LOVED this book! I really liked the first one as well, it's well written, and enchanting, and made me want to know more about the characters. Well, the second book doesn't disappoint, and where the first book was good, this one grabs you by the shirt and throws you right into it!
It's slow moving, but never boring; the author takes her time developing the story, giving each character the time they deserve, time to grow, and at the same time building a sense of foreboding that makes you want to skip parts just to know what's going to happen.
The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have the feeling that the next book will be even better, and I won't have enough stars to give!

Right on the heels of the first book, this one doesn’t disappoint either. Now that one curse has been broken, there are many more questions needing answers, and it seems more magic and evil intent is on the loose as well. With forces threatening to pull them apart, Ferryl and Elizabeth go on a journey to hopefully find answers, even some to questions they never thought to ask. With intrigue around every corner, and magic seeming to weave into every aspect of their lives, will they be able to find their love? Or will they be doomed to live their lives torn apart by forces playing a very long game? It’s a great story, a great saga, and one I highly recommend reading.

Triple Genre Novel

This is truly a romance storyline, but the intrigue is intense and action is always threatening. This is book two in the series and just like the prior book, it comes to conclusion -almost. Then it zooms off again with an unforeseen twist.

Excellent follow up to The Promised One. I love the relationship between Ferryl and Elizabeth as well as developing friendship between Michael and Delaney. Well worth the read and I am looking forward to book 3

WOW. Just....WOW. I thought I had an idea of where this series would go. I was VERY wrong. Farris blew my mind with the depth of characters and the intricacies that emerged in the storyline. This is an epic færytale, indeed.

We pick up the very next morning after The Promised One ends—with Elizabeth and Ferryl in her cottage, tending to her dying father. But damning news sets the course for this book from the very first page, and we learn that their færytale love will face its greatest test yet. Ferryl and Elizabeth are faced with choices that will define them forever. And the question surfaces: will they choose love or will they choose duty?

But more than their love story, The Purloined Prophecy builds on much deeper themes of abuse, not only from Ferryl's mother, but as we learn more about Delaney and Michael's pasts. Farris does an excellent job of unfolding the layers of abuse and how it affects a person. We see Ferryl struggle with both loving his mother and losing trust with her more and more. We see both Michael and Delaney struggle with who they are becoming in light of what they have faced (or are facing).

“I don’t think I know what love is. I don’t think there is such a thing. And even…even those who seem happy—like the prince and Elizabeth—they can’t be, can they? Thanks to me, even their perfect færytale will be destroyed. And Ferryl? He will hate me for it. So will Elizabeth.”

Other themes include destiny, faith, and family. All woven together, this story dives much deeper than the first book, paving the way for a series that I am so excited to continue.

One of the most fascinating scenes in the whole book is on the mountain in Haravelle. Here, Ferryl is faced with the reality of his choices—and he must contend with what he thought he knew versus the truth that is blossoming before his eyes. And the description? Without spoiling it, I have to say that this was one of the most beautiful, passionate, otherworldly scenes I've ever read. To think of what he encounters and how he encounters it... this scene absolutely blew my mind and I may or may not have had to shut the book and cry for a moment just to take it in. Breathtaking.

“He was…
Beyond.
Beyond anything Ferryl could put into words. His light. His color. The radiant glory and power emanating from him like a tangible wave of heat and power and infinity. Eternity. Future and past. The book and the pen that wrote it. The song and the notes that composed it. The canvas and the brush that painted it. Fury. Splendor. Fire. Wonder.
Ferryl wept, a sob tearing from his throat.”

Just gorgeous. The prose in this book blows my mind.

And can we take a moment to talk about Titus? I wasn't exactly sure why he popped up occasionally in the first book. I could tell Farris was obviously going somewhere with him but... his whole story. It's so beautiful. I love how he's fighting tooth and nail to make his life right again. And I love the quiet, looming storm that is King Derrick in his life. I know his story is only going to continue, and I'm both excited and terrified to see what happens to the little færytale he's trying so desperately to make for himself and his wife.

“You expect to still be here in the spring?”
He faced her again, hating that doubt in her voice, that skepticism in her eyes. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said.
Her brows furrowed for only a moment before she looked past him to the fields behind. She didn’t say anything, her eyes scanning the land before meeting his again. “We’ll see.”

All in all, this book exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with. It's hard to believe Farris is such a new author. Her voice is strong, her characters are real, and her world-building is epic. This is a five-star fantasy if ever I've read one. You do not want to miss it!

This story flows a lot better than book one. It still felt slow, but not a boring sort of slow, one that makes you a bit anxious because WHY is everything going so well? When will shit hit the fan? And you just know that it will and you're almost worried how bad it will me. Titus and Penelope were my favorite POVs, I was never disappointed to get to their side story because he was trying and she was hopeful and strong and wonderful.
I knew, I KNEW she was Adelaide and yet the way she(the author) revealed it still gave me goosebumps and sent shivers down my spine. And I think thats what separates "okay" authors from brilliant. And she is brilliant. You know she (Elizabeth/Adelaide) is the lost/dead princess and yet there's shivers, and excitement and wonder when its revealed. You still feel bad for Talia when the truth is out.
Even without huge shit hitting the fan events the book progressed nicely and there wasn't a lull in the story. I'm excited for the rest of the storyline.

Farris does it again!

Building on the incredible characters she introduced in The Promised One, this book is just as good as the first. There's plenty of tension as the characters face higher stakes and impossible situations. I found myself truly cherishing the nice parts and itching at the horrible ones.

I'm starting to think this trilogy should have a place on my physical shelf.

I loved reading this book! although all the "we're better together" and " together we can accomplish anything" lines (which there were a lot of) got on my nerves, I didnt want to put it down and cant wait for part 3 to come out
