Let me just start by saying one thing: I have as much romance in me as a brick. I'm not one of these lovey dovey, PDA, romantic type people. If anything, I could not be any further away from that if I tried. Seriously. That said, I LOVE reading books with a touch of romance. Maybe it's because I am able to see what romance would be like without having to do all of the hard work that goes with it ;). Who knows. I just know that when I sit with a romance novel in front of me, that poor author has a lot of work to do to get me to believe their story. After all, if you can convince a un-romantic person that being romantic is the way to go, what else do you need to do?
Put it this way, Jo Merrett was able to melt the ice around my frozen heart a smidge - definitely a record! If you dislike reading books where sex is at the forefront of the characters minds, then look away now as this book isn't for you. However, if you're a person who wants to read a sexual book but has never had the confidence to pick one up yet, I personally would start the genre with this one. Yes, the erotic theme is severely evident in this book and yes, I did find it got a little bit too much for me at times. That said, the way in which it was brought into the storyline wasn't as 'in your face' as I thought it would be, so I truly believe that 'Reading Between the Lines' is a good starting block for anyone trying out this particular genre for the first time.
I have to admit that I did have a few issues with Kate's character as she seemed to rub me up the wrong way (pardon the pun) on more than one occasion - she came across as a little bit too easy and seemed to do anything where a man was concerned. Whatever floats her boat, obviously. But I personally thought that she lowered my opinion of her due to those actions.
Also, I was impressed at how the storyline had more to it than just sexual innuendos at times - it made the storyline flow a lot easier. I'm not a prude by any means, and whilst I appreciate that with this type of genre erotic themes will be laid bare, I don't like it when they're sticking out like a sore thumb. Even though that was the case with some parts of this book, I was really glad that those themes were incorporated well with the characters jobs, their lifestyles, as well as other parts of the storyline itself.
Overall, 'Reading Between the Lines' is a very saucy, hot to trot read which is guaranteed to leave you feeling a little bit hot under the collar. If you can see past some of Kate's traits and actions, I really do think a lot of people will enjoy this. For me, Kate's character did let the side down, but all in all, I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would.
Reading Between The Lines is Jo Merrett's debut novel and I'm very glad I had a chance to read it.
I enjoyed the book a lot even though I have very mixed feeling about the main character and her judgments. Kate is a woman who has a very sexual life and I guess you could say she has been anti-relationship since her last breakup. She is a woman who gets what she wants but most of the time she doesn't really know what it is exactly that she wants. She's very complicated and I'd say she has little regard to other's peoples feelings, she does things compulsively, only thinking of herself in the moment, and only later does she think about how it affects others. And I hated that side of her. She was very frustrating at times, and I found myself screaming at her a lot lol.
Kate has had a crush on one of her co-workers for forever- Aidan- and she finally reached the point where she needs to do something about it. So she does and while Aidan tells her he is in a relationship, that doesn't stop them from starting a friends with benefits relationship. Kate has hopes that Aidan will leave his girlfriend and that they can have a real relationship but Aidan is very mysterious and complicated and things don't end well.
Even with all the cheating, I couldn't help but hope along with Kate, that Aidan would leave his poor girlfriend and actually be in a real relationship with Kate. It was obvious he had some sort of feelings for her but obviously not enough to change things. And I really hated how he treated her, it was a really douche move and I'm so glad she finally saw that things weren't gonna change, not any time soon. He might have been really hot and the sex might have been off the charts but he was a real douche-bag for the way he treated both his girlfriend and Kate. And I didn't find his mysteriousness endearing, he was super hush hush about everything and even the whole girlfriend business. I'm super curious about him but I have a feeling the discovery won't be something positive. I can't wait to find out if he can redeem himself in the next book.
New job and new Beau later. Kate is moving on but it is not easy. She's insecure and she sabotages herself, Kate can't let herself be happy. I really wanted her to change and let herself be happy and in love with someone who is good and truly cares for her, aka Jack, who is perfect. But Kate still has a long way to go and I have a feeling that she'll keep messing things up on the next book. Especially, after how this one ended. I'm so curious about what will happen next. I have a feeling she's gonna disappoint me and keep on sabotaging herself, and it sucks because I love Jack and I don't want her to hurt him.
As you see, I really did have mixed feelings. Cheating always throw me off. I hated that Kate didn't care that the man she hooked up with were in relationships or her herself was in one but I'm glad she didn't go through with it that one time. I would have been so pissed if she had, I mean I still am because what happened was still not okay but I'm glad she stopped herself.
Please be aware that there is a lot of cheating involved, I wish I had been warned before I read this.
I enjoyed reading this book, even though I would get caught off guard every now and then due to a bit of a language barrier (not enough that I couldn't figure it what was being said). I do wish Kate's living situation, as well as her age, was described right in the beginning of the book. I had thought that she lived at home with her parents. So I was, of course, shocked when she brought a guy home. The book has a nice flow to it. It's not all just sex, but normal everyday situations too. I was torn with reading this book. It kept wanting to find out what would happen next, but the "adult" scenes were not something I could read while my 3 yr old was awake. They were quite descriptive (in a good way). To me, Kate comes off as very easy. So towards once Jack came into the picture I wasn't sure where things were going to go, definitely not where I thought. And the ending.....WOW.....I don't know what to say. I was floored.
I had not realised this was a sexual book (for me it sounded more like porn tbh). Maybe I am just too naive, but this book was not at all what I expected. I would say 50% if not 70% of the book was sex related vs the rest of the story.
