Originally published in 1846 & revised & updated in 1896; this pocket-sized illustrated manual can be used either as a work reference for the home or as a handbook for people visiting historic buildings. Over 400 drawings depict all aspects of the subject, from the brickwork in the walls of ancient Rome to the vaulted roof of Westminster Abbey. As well as extended entries covering entire aspects of construction, Parker also included short definitions of less commonly used architectural terms, a history of the development of particular features, & entries concerning ornamentation & furniture of specific periods.
A helpful resource for illustrations and definitions of European architectural terms. Useful to have in hand when reading books about architecture. The sentences are old-fashioned and somewhat hard for the non-architect to follow, but still enjoyable for the interested contemporary reader.
