A delightful book of reminiscences of the author's lifetime with working horses. The locations range from the Grey River area and his recollections of the Buller mine disaster of 1896 through his early days hauling timber for mine shafts in the Reefton area and on to his days as a goods carrier using horse drawn covered wagons to move goods from Nelson to Murchison. He knows and understands his horses and is a keen observer of nature, particularly birds. The book gives a good insight into life in the coal and gold mining towns of the West Coast of NZ in the early years of the 20th century. Although now out of print, many libraries throughout New Zealand hold copies. Numerous photographs from the times enhance the book.
