Excellent use of the Verbatim
Dr. William Oglesby (1916-1994) was a theologian and professor at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia. As a writer, Biblical Themes for Pastoral Care is Oglesby’s best-known work. It has become a classic and is still widely read by pastors, teachers, counselors, and theological students. Oglesby said that his book was written for “clergy who want to know how the Bible legitimately informs pastoral care.” He reminds the reader that the people in the Bible were human just like we are human. In the shared universal experience, “their story is our story.” After a lengthy introduction, Oglesby gives five Biblical themes: initiative and freedom, fear and faith, conformity and rebellion, death and rebirth, and risk and redemption. After examining the Biblical material on each theme, he applies the themes to the practice of pastoral care and counseling. He uses verbatims – detailed pastoral conversations and case studies to show the relationship between his themes and encounters in ministry. His verbatims are engaging and readers will find excellent examples of how clergy should interact with parishioners.
