“Hand in hand, with fairy grace
Will we sing, and bless this place.”
William Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night's Dream

A beautiful art guide of British fairy paintings mostly done in the Victorian era. It has a easy to read explanation of fairies in the British/Celtic culture and 40 gorgeous color plates of some of the most famous fairy paintings. All of my favorite fairy artists were in this book: John Aster Fitzgerald, Sir Joseph Noel Paton, Henry Fuseli, Richard Dadd and John Simmons. I never will look at a fairy paintings again with the same eyes after reading this book and the biographies of the artists are pretty amazing. The book made me curious about one of them in particular, Sir Joseph Paton, whose painting “The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania” is astounding. According to the author, when the painting was first shown, Sir Paton's close friend wrote him a note that read: “the asinine multitude....might say this, because you painted fairies as they were never painted before, that argues that you can do nothing else, & that you are stark raving mad.” Highly recommend to art lovers. Five well-deserved stars.
