THE FIRST BOOK IN THE JAMES SAGA Falling in love with a slave- can it ever work?
Lawrence James is immediately drawn to Jasmine Thomas. She’s attractive, opinionated and kind. But she’s a slave – a definitive non-starter as a son of a plantation owner in South Carolina in 1860. Yet, Lawrence cannot help himself and as he spends more time with her, his feelings continue to grow.
However, there are other problems for Lawrence. He has been groomed to take over the Havers End plantation, but Lawrence has a deep uneasiness about becoming a slave owner. His position is not helped by his volatile relationship with his father, Edward and what the consequences will be if Edward finds out about his relationship with Jasmine.
There are also concerns over his eldest sister, Belvedere Rossiter, and her growing friendship with a rebellious slave, Donald Archer. While Lawrence loathes Donald, Belvedere has an opposing view. Lawrence’s biggest dilemma is - does he choose to be the dutiful son or risk everything to be with Jasmine?
I have written and published eight novels. My first novel, The Fall of the House of James, spent some time at the Number 1 spot on Amazon, (History of Antebellum U.S. Chart.) The other seven novels are Always A Slave, A Slave's Vow, Betrayal of Love, Between Love and War, The Devil Within, To Sleep With A Stranger and A Sweet Taste For Revenge. After a really challenging time, the sixth novel in The James Saga, A Sweet Taste For Revenge, has just been released and is available on Amazon. I will hopefully begin working on the seventh novel in The James Saga, Victory Or Surrender, shortly. When I am not writing, I like to read, exercise and socialise. I am grateful for all of the lovely reviews which I have received. Please feel free to contact me or ask a question here. You can also contact me via my email. Jasmine is a confusing young woman. Here on again off again attitude is not enjoyable. Lawrence is too quite a hypocrite concerning his relationship with as slave and his sister's relationship with Donald her driver, who is also a slave. I am wanting to read the next book because of two things mentioned in first book that piqued my interest. So next book please!
I enjoyed the book. But I have to admit most of the time I was ready to hit both of the main characters. Lawrence and Jasmine aren't working for me. He's too much of a hypocrite and she cries way too much. He keeps teasing this relationship with Millie and acting like she's wrong to be jealous. This is the first one of these books that I actually despise the male lead. It's like he doesn't grow, even after falling in "love" with Jasmine. He doesn't have any thoughts of the future for them. Nonetheless this a great read. It shows a lot of the struggles an interracial couple would have to face in that time period.

Good read, definitely a page turner. I’m looking forward to seeing how things will turnout for Lawrence and Jasmine, Bell and Donald. Back in that era, having an interracial relationships is a death wish. Poor Rosalind my heart goes out to her dealing with Carmichael. I hope he get what he deserves. Sadly the treatment of slaves were horrible. Very heartbreaking. Looking forward to book 2
It was a page Turner for sure. My favorite character was Donald. He is a very honorable man. Intelligent, strong, loyal, and wise. I love everything that he stands for. I think that Jasmine's character is a bit naive. She make me wanna puke sometimes. Lawrence!!!!!! Ummmm... I really can't wait til part two. I wanna know what Grace told Edward and if they were once involved.
Slaves with first and last names, never happened! The lingo of the slaves is very poorly written. Slaves talking about "getting married." It was against the law for slaves to marry.
Ms. Austin, go back and do some serious research and try it again! Your overall idea for the story is good. It just needs to be more authentic of the time and place. Sincerely, A history fanatic
It took those words to get Jasmine all The way together. Unfortunately, this sits in the minds & hearts of Black People..The THOUGHT of in someone's mind..' My people owned Your people'..smh 😔😡
I never finished the book. I reached 40% and even though I skipped quite a bit I still could not make myself finish it. How is it you are in love after 2 conversations is beyond me.
I loved the book! I don't usually read romance, but this book definitely captured my attention! The characters are well thought and likable, I really want to know what happens next, so book 2 - here I come.
I have read many books on similar story lines, but this is first series prompting me to order second book as soon sad Zi finished writing a review. I want to know immediately what occurs next?!
This book was surprisingly very good. I liked how realistic the conflicts were in the story between various characters. I look forward to reading the second book.
