If you are looking for a photographic record of old Hawaii, there are three books I can recommend. The first and my unequivocal favorite is The Saga of the Sandwich Islands a lovingly collected album of old photographs and stories. You will find things in that rare and expensive book you never knew existed.

My second pick is Hawaii Looking Back, which has less of everything, but is far more professionally edited and written. It includes text by the late Glen Grant, a man who did so much to preserve old Hawaii.

My final pick is A Photographer in the Kingdom which is also rare, though still in print. This book follows the work of one photographer--Christian Hedemann. His work is beautiful and striking, and some of this book is very touching such as a shot of his sick child whom you come to realize is lying in her deathbed.

Of these three great books, A Photographer in the Kingdom is the most intimate.
