Rate this book
Photographer Septimus Blackwood is on a quest to rebuild and rise out of the ashes of his own ambitions. Along the way he encounters many unforeseen obstacles. These obstacles include the mysterious inhabitants of a long abandoned theatre, a nefarious foe and an elusive nocturnal gang. Also there are unseen forces at large here; those that hide under, slate, silk and stone. An old map is unearthed, its woven threads tell of a lost island and forbidden fruit.

As the luminescence of gas lamps stretches across a dark city, a power struggle ensues. Who will be the bringer of light to Victorian London? Amongst the mayhem is Rick Best, a reporter turned detective with an obsession to track down one of London’s most notorious villains. Spring Heeled Jack has eluded justice for decades. Is his time now up?

Will Septimus sacrifice everything in pursuit of his goal?

Another captivating read from Greg Howes! I would recommend reading 'The Man Behind the Glass' first, as this book follows on from that, although I reckon it could be enjoyed even if you haven't read the first book.
Greg brings the characters and settings to life with beautiful and intricate descriptions throughout. You really feel that you know the characters, especially Septimus, and the book draws you into their world, their lives and their thoughts.
I don't like giving away too much about the story in reviews, but there are some dark, chilling moments as well as light-hearted ones too, Well worth a read!!

The Movement of Light is a Fabulous read, I am hooked! There is nothing to compare this story to; the unique history of Old London's Moth-men is glorious. I recommend to anyone interested in the esoteric history of London's underground and the intriguing adventures of what and how the boundaries of life are unraveling with the finds of the Toshers, the men who go to the underground world. Septimus Blackwood, the main character, is on a treasure trove of unimaginable delights as he studies the nature of moth-men and the transformation of life into other dimensions; other avenues. His encased photographs are now coming alive, or is he losing his mind? His theater of the arts is a portal to other worlds. Is his old associate, the chemist, dead or alive and what are his ambitions? An amazing story I very much enjoyed.

Septimus Blackwood delves headlong into the murky underworlds of London and those who would prevent him from achieving his ruthless ambitions. Evocative settings and a multitude of colourful characters are the backdrop of his adventures- including an abandoned eerie theatre and its inhabitants, and the evasive moth-men. In his own story and quest, is Rick Best, a reporter determined to capture the most notorious Spring-Heeled Jack. Fast paced and evocative read that transports you to another world.
