In 1851, in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California, gold hunters search for their riches, but Samuel Garrison is on an even more intense search. He is on the trail of a dangerous and evil man, and he carries .44 caliber bullets in his Colt Dragoon with the man's name on them. In Columbia Township, Ohio, Garrison left behind a busy life as a farmer and horse rancher, and at times, he wishes he was still in Ohio, rather than in this wild and barely-civilized frontier; but he is in gold country because he made a promise, one he intends to keep, even if it means his death. Garrison discovers his world changing dramatically as he faces anxiety, family secrets, denials, death, and grief. Can Samuel Garrison meet the many challenges and terrors that he faces in this raw land, and will he be able to transform those fears into courage?

Linda Pendleton, wife of the creator of the popular Mack Bolan/Executioner series, Don Pendleton, is a talented and prolific author of many types of books. THE BOLD TRAIL is a different kind of Western set in California during the mid-1800s Gold Rush. It’s told from the perspective of a man whose wife was murdered by a seriously bad man who Garrison wants to track down and kill. Pendleton clearly did her homework about the California Gold Rush days and includes many interesting facts about the history of the Gold Rush and what the area and people were like. The early chapter about a Mexican woman who is hung for killing a miner who tried to rape her is immediately gripping and immerses you into the place and time. And, although the novel has plenty of action and multiple shootouts, it also has a sweet love story. In fact, there are two: Garrison’s love for his first wife who was murdered, then his love for another woman he met years later during his hunt for his first wife’s killer. Pendleton gives the characters real depth and, based on the novel’s subtitle “A Samuel Garrison Western,” it appears be the first in a planned series. I’ll be riding along.
