Fascinating biography of Grenville M. Dodge, chief engineer for the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad as it made the great transcontinental thrust. Illustrated with black and white photos. With bibliography and index. 371 pages.
This book was originally published in 1929 by Bobbs-Merrill Co and reprinted in 1981 by Arco Press. Grenville M. Dodge lacks the fame of Gould, Ames and Harriman, but Dodge was a towering figure in railroad surveying and construction in the western half of the United States. I read this book about ten years ago and do not recall the details of Dodge's accomplishments, but this rather obscure volume will be of interest to those researching the story of the Union Pacific and other western roads.
