Describes the daily activities at Mount Vernon in October 1785 and the work of French artist Jean Antoine Houdon as he prepares to make a statue of George Washington--as seen through the eyes of a pet cat.
This is a story that follows George Washington's cat as the cat tries to find him. George Washington is in the process of getting a sculpture made of him after the Revolutionary war. I think this book would be good for 2nd or 3rd graders. At the end of the book there are notes about where they got the information for the events that took place. For example, his granddaughter really did think that he had died when he was laying with plaster on his face. There are letters she wrote that confirmed this information. It would be very important for students to read the final author's note.
I bought this book at Mount Vernon which makes it all the more special. My kids love hearing the story and then asking me about what the house and grounds are really like! Cute story
"Ou Était George Washington?" is the French version that we also bought at Mount Vernon. Has been a great way for the kids to practice their French while learning a little about Mount Vernon.
