Majestika: The Art of Monte Michael Moore

Rate this book
An all-new collection of the very best works by award-wining fantasy artist Monte Moore, Majestika focuses mainly on his celebrated erotic paintings but goes beyond these to show the full scope of his talent. Moore was one of only 4 artists chosen (out of more than 100 worldwide) to create a limited edition pin-up print for the Uniquely Playmates line of collectibles for Playboy. The images of lusciously proportioned, sensual women showcased here reveal exactly in the best fantasy tradition, they pose provocatively in skimpy clothing and appear in the guise of angels, mermaids, and warrior maidens. But other, different paintings present monsters, a menagerie of magical creatures, and an illustrated story titled “Bloodlines.” Moore himself writes the introduction and explains his methodology and marketing strategies.

After collecting and reading so many various artwork books from the Papertiger series I have to say that after a while I realise there are certain patterns and styles and even sources that start to appear. Now I will not admit I know the answer - is it the books that fall in to a certain style (possibly as a result of how the staff pick and prepare their next book for publication) or if it is the reputation of the publisher - which I doubt since you can certainly see how styles and focuses change over the years - again though that could be due to editorial direction or management changes - I guess I will never know.
However the reason I say all of this is that the art in this book follows a very particular them which I realised was confirmed when I took a closer look at what the art was used for . A lot of the art in this book ended up as either collectable card games (there is even reference to the Harry Potter one - didn't know that) to roleplaying and other games related art - all of which were focused around a period of time. I guess you can say this is a book from a certain time and even though the fantasy genre has moved on it still raises a smile when you see it referenced like this.
