Not My Jane

Rate this book
Is Jane Bennet of Pride and Prejudice an ideal elder sister ... or an idealised elder sister? Let's face it, Canon Elizabeth's ability to sketch characters isn't as great as she thinks it is. This story's Elizabeth has it even worse.

This is a short story where Lizzy learns that Jane is a mercenary witch... the Gardiners are grubbing little social climbers and Fitzwilliam Darcy is wonderful.

I would have liked more...

7-chapters + a short epilogue + a vignette: Rating: clean:

OOC characters… there seems to be a rash of NSNJ [not-so-nice-Jane] stories lately and I have to say I rather like them. This story was OK… I was left a bit meh in the romance department. I wanted more feelings between our dear couple. I like D&E having page time and I liked seeing Lizzy change her mind and attitude about him. I was glad to see that this wasn’t done in an instant. Other feelings and opinions had to be altered or adjusted first before love could blossom. I just thought it took way too long for her to make up her mind regarding her feelings.

I did hate to see a conniving and mercenary Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. That was a bit painful. I also didn’t care for the way they blew off Lizzy’s training… shaking their heads at her ever becoming a proper lady worthy of them. And how they didn’t have any hopes of her making a good match. That was harsh indeed. They were constantly pushing Jane forward. At the same time, they insisted that Lizzy, as the old saying goes, put her light under a bushel. That was tough to swallow. Elizabeth had trouble with that as well. There seemed to be no one on her side… except Mr. Darcy. There was a family scandal that had to be dealt with. However, it was not from the sister I expected.

If you are in the mood for a mean and mercenary Jane and Mrs Gardiner, this short story is it.

A fun and intriguing variation that had a twist to the beautiful Jane as Darcy eavesdrop on a conversation between Jane and her mother at the Netherfield ball. Elizabeth was clueless to her relatives machinations but will be enlightened...

Very interesting plot. What if Jane was mercenary.? What if Jane was MORE than mercenary? And what Lizzy’s ability to sketch characters was so bad as to be nonexistent. Even worse what if the Gardiners were also mercenary?

A good story would need to be written. I liked the story a lot.

In this unpublished Pride and Prejudice variation, the proposal at Hunsford has an interesting twist in that Darcy KNOWS that Jane is not missing Bingley's attentions and shares his knowledge with Elizabeth. She learns that she has been naive to her sister's mercenary ways as encouraged by her mother and then supported by her Aunt Gardiner! A chance meeting with Darcy allows her to apologize and he asks if he can call on her. All the while, Jane thinks Darcy is visiting her. Elizabeth and Darcy find their version of happily ever after while avoiding her family as much as possible. There are a few points were she shows that she still cares for them and the story has a lovely end.

In this short Pride and Prejudice variation Elizabeth Bennet realises she is not as clever as she thought she was when she discovers the true nature of Jane and the Gardiners. I would have liked the story to have been more about Jane (when she actually becomes an interesting character rather than the bland canon one) then Elizabeth and Darcy. But still an enjoyable story.
