This is an excellent book on the early days of American auto racing. The author's obvious love of the subject comes through in the myriad details of the cars, drivers and tracks of the period. The majority of the book concerns the Duesenberg, Miller and Frontenac cars. The Miller cars get extra special treatment. The book is filled with mechanical detail and we follow the rapid evolution from cars that vibrated themselves to pieces to cars so exquisitely crafted that they are considered works of art and mechanical wonders by many.

Because the book was written in the early 1960s, the author had access to many primary sources such as Leo Goossen, Fred Offenhauser and Tommy Milton. There are separate chapters on Harry Miller, Louis Chevrolet and the Duesenberg brothers as well as multiple chapters on the cars they built. The book is heavy on technical detail rather than racing action. There are also two chapters on the legendary Frank Lockhart who was an ace driver and mechanical genius. The book has a large number of photos of the people and cars of the period as well as detail shots of the engines and components of the cars.

This book would be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about the racing cars of the early 20th century. Highly recommended.

An excellent view into the birth of American auto racing and the people who with amazing creativity made it happen. Borgeson's passion is very evident as in his Miller book he has passed the old masters passion for perfection on to the reader.
