Chuck McGregor, adrenaline junkie, is done with combat and itching for something to do. He's got wealth on his side, but no direction to guide him. For now, he spends his days on the Georgia beach and his nights drinking too much. He has no job, no friends, no purpose.
Until one day on the beach he hears a young woman scream, fighting to get away from two men. When he goes to help, one of them pulls a gun. And, as the men drag the girl away, Chuck McGregor finds his new purpose: save this girl he's never met. No matter the cost.
This is a very exciting new action packed story with a new 'good guy', Chuck McGregor, a war veteran who is still combat ready and searching for what to do since he left the service. He came home as his father died, leaving Chuck enough money to take care of himself for life. The emptiness and loss leave Chuck drinking in excess for days, until he hears a woman scream, followed by two men manhandling a fearful young lady on the beach! Chuck is that type of person who has an intense desire to help the good folks, and to keep evil away. He immediately decides to find out what is happening around here and to rescue the woman. The characters we meet are well described and we either like them or hate them. Chuck meets with his old partner from when he was a cop before entering the army, learning several things about where to check for answers and the sex trafficking business. The plot is awesome and you watch the story unfold on the edge of your seat! I really enjoyed the tale, keeping my interest held and turning pages quickly, not stopping until I read the last word in this series opener! I definitely am ready for the next thing to happen and will be awaiting the second book! I received an ARC from Hidden Gems and author Tom Haase, both of whom I thank for a thrilling ride! I am putting my thoughts into this review for others who enjoy a fight for the good guy! Happy that I am introduced to this author and excited to read more of his work!!
Hard-charging Chuck McGregor, former Savannah police officer, former Army Airborne on special ops for the Defense Intelligence Agency, finds himself at a loss after finally leaving the military. Almost immediately, his father, a very wealthy hedge fund owner, dies and leaves Chuck majorly well-off. But that doesn't satisfy the void in Chuck 's spirit, and neither does heavy consumption of alcohol.
But finding a purpose does, and in this, having friends on the Savannah Police force does. In an accidentally witnessed event on the Tybee Island beach, a purpose reveals itself. Suddenly Chuck discovers the bugaboo of contemporary society-human trafficking--and Chuck 's own moral compass unleashes a new Rambo, as he determines to take down all and sundry, while saving all the victims he can. Go, Chuck!!
Chuck McGregor is an easy character to like. However, some of the other characters in the book could benefit from a bit more development. A compelling story with lots of nonstop action and a great pace and full of twists and turns. This has definite potential to become a great series.
Fast pace action adventure book. If you are a veteran, you will relate to this character. Love the veteran aspect and his operations in this book. And I am a female veteran :P. Book moved so fast that I was done reading before I knew it.
Nice to have a character that believes in what is right and does what is right. The blurb says that he sees a girl being dragged off but the rest of the book is what happens after that incident. Read it, you will enjoy it.
I want to see where the next book goes in this series because I have a guess to what will happen inthe long run. Be interesting to see if my guess is right.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest and freely given review.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy from Hidden Gems. Betrayed Angel is a story that puts plot over character development. From the start, the story was going places. The problem was that there was not enough details describing the characters' thoughts, feelings, or motivations. People just seem to appear in the story, say a sentence or two and then vanish until they were needed again for the storyline.
Some of the plot points were unbelievable, such as an agent working for the D.A. that also moonlights as an interior decorator who just so happened to start working for the story's protagonist, Chuck McGregor. Really? The rape in this story and the casual way it was addressed really bothered me as a reader. The dialogue was basic, awkward, and unnatural at times. I tried to picture characters saying the dialogue as written and I just couldn't picture any native English speaker talking the way the characters sometimes did in the book.
However, that being said, this story was a standard bad guys vs. good guys story. I read through it to see what would happen in the end. I would have rated this book higher if there had been greater character development and more realistic dialogue.
Chuck McGregor is lost, confused, and looking for a new life since he retired from the Army. He is wasting his days away by drinking and laying on the beach until one fateful day when he witnesses what he will later discover is the kidnapping of a young woman who is mistreated and owned by the men who have her. He moved back home to his childhood city to find that a lot has changed since he joined the Army.
The police aren't able to do their job due to one of their own working against them, but is it only one of their own? Can Chuck trust anyone? He will have the chance meetings of high school teammates, old bosses, and past partners, but who will he be able to trust and rely on. His relationship with his old Sergeant, when he was a police officer has not improved, and actually things are even worse than they were before he went into the Army.
The story line of this book was good and it was interesting. I kept wondering who would be on Chuck's side and who he would be betrayed by. It kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen to Chuck and the people that he met and worked with. It had it's ups and downs throughout the story. It was a slow read in the beginning but it picked up after the first few chapters. I give this story a 3.5 star review.
Received this book as an ARC for my honest review. Chuck is the main character and he moved back to his home town after his father passed away. He needed to find "home" again and wanted to start there. There are a lot of characters in the book and it was extremely trite, unrealistic and just so pathetic until about 3/4ths of the way through the book then it became good. It was almost like it was a different author. I really want to read part 2 even after knowing that most of the book was not great but the last part had me hooked. The only problem I had with the last part was Chuck was made out to be God's gift to every woman that walked and that made it again very unrealistic. I will reserve total judgement until after I read the 2nd book about this author in general.
Provided with a free ARC for an honest review. Certainly not the most exciting book I have ever read. It almost reads like a documentary. The story was good but it lacked oomph. The characters and dialogue are stiff and show no emotion. Chuck hooks up with a couple women and all I can say is so what. I might consider reading more just to see if the potential I see is realized.
Poor character development. All the women are gorgeous, some even with strong physiques and all the men are well built and strong, able to overcome unbelievable odds even if they are special army trained. The cut and dried narrative style leaves me somewhat cold as well. There was enough interest and intrigue to get me to the end though.
After the death of his father, Chuck McGregor returns to his home town after leaving the army. He encounters a girl who is man handled on the beach and taken back to a brothel. Chuck sets out to rescue her, then finds himself up against the gang running the major operation. Introduction story and scene setter for more.
This was a good book with lots of action. Particularly of interest to this reader since I lived in Savannah and at one time worked at 82nd Airborne Has at Ft. Bragg.
