This nifty little book provides interesting snippets of information about transportation while offering some history about how humans have managed to move from place to place. Since the book is divided into four sections about travel via wheels or along rails or through the air or water, readers receive a crash course in human ingenuity and the great lengths humans have gone to move from one place to another as efficiently and swiftly as possible. Not only was I impressed with all the territory on this topic that is covered here, but I was equally delighted to see that the author and illustrator took great pains to approach travel and transportation from a global point of view and not just that of the Western world. Thus, readers encounter hot air balloons, bullet trains, canoes, and school children skiing to class rather than riding on buses or cars due to the severe weather conditions. The illustrations are lively and contain details so that readers feel as though they are on one of those vehicles. Who knows but that some young reader may be the one to invent the next best thing in transportation?
