Twelve-year-old Joshua isn’t so sure about his move from California to Addy, Washington. Even with the new house his dad built for them and the chance to explore something new, he’s more worried about what will happen once summer ends—the terrifying prospect of having to make new friends in a new town. But when Joshua and his dad meet their unexpected neighbors, he finds he might just have one friend after all. Kaley is bold, silly, and doesn’t seem to find Joshua’s oddities all that odd. Together, they explore their new home and meet an old woman named Vera, whose property includes the cave they’ve discovered. But when Vera tells them stories of children over the years who have gone missing near that cave, their curiosity gets the better of them. What they find in the cave, though, is wilder and more magical than they could have ever imagined. A world where time does not exist. Where animals talk. Where only the pure heart of a child lets you through to the other side of the wall. And this world desperately needs their help.
This is a great kid's book. The characters are realistic and their banter is great. The cover is super eye-catching and gorgeous. My only dislike is the head-hopping that happens all throughout. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone.
Mr. Mackey writes excellent books for upper elementary/middle school aged children, and this was no exception. The story was clean, the children smart and true to character, and the plot entertaining. I recommend this book.
