An amazing read that gives us a very thorough account of what it was like to be a woman in the 19th century. Even though I knew life was not easy for women in this period, I still had a few romantic ideas which were completely demolished after reading this collection of the experiences of 19th century women as told by themselves: the book is a collection of writings by those women or interviews (with women that could not read or write) and other accounts by their contemporaries, with short introductory chapters that provide objective and impartial context. From upper to lower classes, women led difficult lives and were deprived of the most important of all rights, freedom. We owe them so much for the changes they achieved and we still have so much to do.
I read this book via Bookcrossing, but will be getting my own copy sooner than later. Pity there is no translation available.
