From my boyhood on, I have known and used in one foreign country and another Phrase Books. Quite usually these books were filled with all sorts of appealing some of it right jolly, some of it pretentiously high-brow. I enjoyed all these books and never found the least quarrel with them, except that by some chance or other no one ever taught me anything I really wanted to say. They left me stranded in my moments of real emergency.
