Jerrod Danmyer's family was among the first to migrate to Kansas, establish a ranch, and own much of the range near the town of Eden. Ten years ago Stover Gates brought his family to Eden from the coal mines of Ohio, but soon after their arrival Stover's brother Zeb was killed by Jerrod's brother. From then on, Stover shunned the Danmyers and persuaded many of his neighbors to do the same. Over the years nature dealt many setbacks to them, rancher and farmer alike, rich and poor - droughts, bitter winters, a monthlong rainstorm, and now a plague of locusts. Some people see the pestilence as a sign from God, a chance to repent and be more charitable toward their neighbors. Unfortunately, a few see it as an opportunity to line their own pockets, feeding on the misfortunes of others, even resorting to murder to get what they want.
This author that is around 78 years old wrote his last book most likely in 2020 (The Valeron Series) I have loved all of his books, characters, and stories but he cuts them too short! This couple had to work so hard and go through such hardships to make it. Like someone said—a Romeo and Juliet like story. Damn this author always cuts his stories too short. The evil Quantrill raiders show up again. The hordes of locusts/crickets are about the worst villains here. I deplore mean, over zealous fathers that treat there children like chattel and slaves
Ride Against the Wind takes place in Kansas between 1874 and 1876. Jerrod Danmyer and family are cattle ranchers. Marian Gates is the 19-year-old daughter of Stover Gates, a farmer. Hardships caused by drought, bitter winters, and a plague of locusts are battles sent by Mother Nature. The battles of wrongdoing and pride fester between the families. When Stover decides Marian is to be courted and married to Wolfgang, son of a pig farmer, Marian battles for her right to choose. The story is good. The plague of locusts was shocking.
I loved this one and loved being surprised by the ending! I had to collect cow pies one winter at my grandparents ranch, though I was lucky that they were in a dry barn! A early snow had the fire wood pile buried under six inches of snow. A smell I hope I never experience again! Loved this book!
Well, you talk about a man that never gives up. Wait until you read about Jerrod Danmyer. I couldn’t put this book down. I read straight through from start to finish.
