The essays give a broad understanding of the contents of a Chinese garden, then focus on the specific contents and construction of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver, Canada. The book was informative, the pictures were gorgeous, and the essays work well together, but could stand well alone as well.
I wish there had been a little more detail about the specific plants and architecture, but that is no fault of the book.
Excellent introduction to Chinese scholar gardens and a great overview of the history of the Sun Yat-Sen Gardens. I do wish it was longer and with more photographs and "blue prints."
The Chinese brilliancy is to be found in a garden.. a harmony of contrasts of dark and light, solid and empty, hard and soft, straight and undulating, yin and yan.
