Destined To Dominate is book two in the Captain's Duet series. This is a series of BDSM / Dark romance books. Please be sure to read all triggers before picking this up.
With that said, It seems like the author did some extensive research about BDSM which I appreciate. I read SO MANY books where it feels the author couldn't be bothered to take even 5 minutes to look up what things are aftercare are or how to safely participate in BDSM "activities." I know it's "just" a book, but we don't want to encourage dangerous practices either, right? But yeah. Red Phoenix certainly put in some effort. Our main characters are Candy and Captain again; as their story continues in book two.. Captain is military, if you couldn't tell. They have an age gap which at times worries Captain. He feels as though Candy deserves a younger Dom that can stay with her longer, but Candy just wants him.
The author has done an amazing job having equal parts spice, storyline and romance. Ill definitely be reading more by this author.
I have pretty much copied my Amazon review here, not because I was lazy, but because it doesn't bear changing. This book is Book #2 in The Captain's Duet from Red Phoenix. Neither of the books in this Duet are at all like the previous Brie books. In the Brie series, we've followed Brie Bennett through her first day at the Submission Training Center, all the way through to her marriage to Sir Thane Davis and their subsequent baby. The steam fairly rose off our Kindles while we read. And once the story of Brie had been told, the other books in the series centered on the main characters such as Tono, Rystar, and Master Anderson. All were highly entertaining and well written, and gave us great insights into their characters as well as plenty of steamy scenes to enjoy.
Not so much this Duet. If you were to look at these two books together, Safe Haven is the past, and Destined to Dominate is the present and future. And since I just finished the ARC of Destined to Dominate, I can tell you that it, too, is different than the previous books. And I use the term different in the sense that it is neither better nor worse than the other books - it tells a story, and Red Phoenix is very good at that, but this Duet, in my opinion, went off the rails slightly. It stopped being about a BDSM lifestyle and started to become a vanilla story somewhere along the way. This was more about Captain and Candy both accepting everything in their past in order to move forward and towards each other. And while I wasn't disappointed to be reading a story about Captain and Candy, I was slightly confused when I realized that BDSM was almost an afterthought.
The other part of this book, and in fact the duet as a whole, that I didn't care for is the interchangeable D/s with Master/Pet. Captain and Candy have a Master/pet relationship, which is far different than a Dom/sub lifestyle and could be considered far less (or more, if you are living it) in terms of "lifestyle" (by explanation, I will say that I have many friends living D/s lifestyles and a few in Master/pet lifestyles - they are different in loads of ways). In the book Candy compared hers and Captain's relationship with Brie and Sir and thought to herself that she is happy that hers isn't so restrictive. That struck me as an odd thought, since the entire series of books is about BDSM, but MAINLY about the D/s dynamic, and a lot of previous attention has been paid to the exchange of power that occurs in a good, strong D/s relationship. So for Candy to dis it, so to speak, surprised me.
Destined to Dominate was more tear-jerker than anything else. If anyone has any triggers about death and/or familial betrayal and rejection, this is NOT the book to read or at least read it knowing that your triggers will get hit repeatedly. There is steam in this book, but nowhere near as much as we've come to expect from Red's books, another slight disappointment. My first love is erotica and erotic romance. Second love is steamy romance. And then follows romance, and all the other possible genres, as I read everything that's in front of me. This book read, for all intents and purposes, like a steamy contemporary romance which isn't what I read Red Phoenix for. I read her because she knows the BDSM lifestyle and writes about it accurately, and she knows how to write SEX. She doesn't turn erotic prose into porn, she turns it lovingly into erotic romance.
Overall I am giving the book 4 stars, not because it isn't well written but because it was not quite what I have come to expect from the Brie series. In addition, the triggers regarding death and familial rejection which were even more prevalent in this book than the last. I would caution anyone with concerns about family and death to be prepared to shed many tears and possibly an even stronger emotional response with this book.
Would I read Red Phoenix again? Of course I would. Do I hope that she puts the Brie series and its characters back on the BDSM rails, I sure do. As I said somewhere else on another review - I would rather read thousands of pages written by an author who knows the BDSM lifestyle than even one word from an author who does not understand it and would not be able to live in it.
"Maturity doesn’t come from age. It comes from grief. Once you accept it’s a part of everyday life, it has less power to hold you hostage with fear.”
Wow! Destined to Dominate was a explosive continuation to Captin and Candy's story! I could not devour this book fast enough! I loved getting to see more scenes with all the Doms we have come to love from Brie. I really enjoyed the crossovers and some scenes from previous books in a differemt POV. It really brought more light and angles to them scenes. No love story is ever easy and Captain and Candy was no different. I loved taking this journey with them. I was definitely surprised with some of these characters history and previous struggles. I also loved the author did a age gap with the characters. It's something I don't get to read often. They had a unique relationship and style that kept you intrigued. Their chemistry sizzles from the pages. Captain and Candy had a beautiful haunting love story that keeps to captivated to the very end.
"The outer shell of a woman does not matter. It is the heart that defines her.”
Candy has easily become one of my favorite heroines! I loved getting to know her more and the obstacle's she's overcome. She did nothing but develops and frow over this duet. What I once had mistaken for weakness I quickly discovered was unwavering strength. My heart definitely broke for Candy many times. I couldn't imagine going through the things her character did. This diet definitely made you admire her characters ability to face anything in her way.
"As a Captain, you know your men’s lives are on the line anytime you’re on the battlefield—it’s a burden you always carry."
Captain has officially won my heart. His compassionate caring nature is truly mesmerizing. He is the most generous Dom's I have ever read about. He could definitely swoon your heart when he broke out his charm. My heart broke for Captain many times during this book. His flashbacks and memories from the war definitely tug at your heart strings. But no matter what obstacle Captain faced, he did so with determination and strength. You could not help but admire his character for that!
*4&1/2 STARS* Well earned for this rollercoaster ride of Angst! I absolutely can not wait to see what awaits me next with the wonderful characters from Brie.
4.5 Star Review of Destined To Dominate (Captain’s Duet #2) by Red Phoenix This was a great continuation of Captain and Candy’s story and one I am so pleased I read. I was anxious to read the conclusion to their story and I wasn’t disappointed. I fell more for the scarred and wounded warrior than ever before. Although at times I felt that there was a little too much emphasis on Captain’s “stories”, it did help to get some perspective on back stories from other books. This was a truly emotional read that had me invested from the start. The roller coaster of life that both Captain and Candy go though had me in tears at times but such was the depth of their love it also gave me hope. Destined To Dominate was an emotional journey that often had me tearing up so you have been warned. This to me was certainly a more emotional book that others I have read from Red Phoenix. It tugged at my heart strings numerous times and gave me shivers. Captain and Candy really are each other’s soul mates, the love they have for one another helps them to heal and I am so glad they got their happily ever after.
Overall, a 3.5 star read for me. There is a part of me that feels a bit like a hypocrite for saying this because this duet did veer from the usual Brie's Submission format, but for me it veered a little too much. While I like a different type of read, and appreciate when an author mixes things up and doesn't continually release carbon copies of previous works, there was just something that felt off about Candy and Captain's story. As I stated in my review of Safe Haven, the age difference was tough for me to wrap my head and heart around. Each time, Candy and Captain would share an intimate experience there was a part of me that wanted to notify Dateline's To catch a Predator....I know, I know that he was the one showing all the restraint for such a long time, but still...a thirty-six year age gap just proved too difficult for me. It's like when I found out that seventy year old Larry King was going to be a father again, creepy.
The book was well written because let's face it, Red Phoenix can write people! She is an automatic one click author for me and this duet does not change that distinction. It simply means, that after devouring every book in the Brie's Submission series, I finally stumbled on a pairing that just wasn't my speed. That's the bottom line here.
As individual characters I think that both Candy and Captain are likable characters, and deserving of finding their happily ever afters; I just would have preferred that the HEA wasn't found in each other. Just a personal opinion and not reflective of my views on Red Phoenix in any way. She had to write the way her heart was led to by the characters she knows better than any of us, and I can respect that. I look forward to what lies ahead in this series that I love so much, and wish her all the success with her latest release.
Holy cow Captain and Candy’s story was filled with so much emotion you will need Kleenex for sure!! The happiness you feel going on this journey with them is incredible. I can’t wait for more from this amazing series!
Captain and Candy's story continues in Destined to Dominate. Captain is convinced that Candy deserves a Dom that can be with her for the long run. Their age gap has put a time limit on what he can offer her for a future. Candy knows deep down that he is the only one for her.
Throughout this eloquently told story, Red Phoenix reveals the trials and tribulations of Captain's life before, during and after his time in the Army. The elements of his back story that have shaped him into the man and Dom he is today. This heartfelt, poignant and sexy story has all the feels.
True to her style, Red Phoenix delivers the characters as if you were there with them. I felt transported to the scenes, and not just reading words on a page. Full of the BDSM heat we know and love, and the familiar faces of the Submissive training center, this one book not to be missed.
Destined to Dominate truly is a story where love conquers all and has no limits, especially with such a beautiful D/s couple. It’s full of sorrow and grief, acceptance and peace, get-yourself-a-towel hotness, and a love that will last a lifetime. This will be a book that I will read over and over again and it’s no surprise that Red Phoenix wrote it. She never fails to bring out my emotions, no matter what she writes.
Captain is a man that I have absolutely fallen in love with. His courage, determination, stoicism, devotion to country, Candy, and their chosen family, are all what makes him such an amazing man. While part of me wishes he didn’t have so much grief in his life, I believe it’s what made him the man he is and that man is incredible. What he did for Candy, even though it broke his heart to do so, was just one aspect of how extraordinary he is.
Candy’s maturity belies her years. There were times that I forgot just how young she is, because the wisdom and sensibility are exceptional. If I had someone like her in my life, I’d count myself blessed. It does make my heart hurt for her because of her past experiences, but like Captain, they made her the woman she is now, and I wouldn’t dare wish to change her.
There’s so much more I want to say, but I don’t want to spoil it. Destined to Dominate is a story that brought me to tears multiple times. And I’m not talking just watery eyes and little sniffles. There were moments where that ugly cry would not be denied. Now, it’s not all just tear-jerking. There were moments where it just made my heart glow, made me proud, made me laugh and chuckle, and made me wish for a very cold shower. Thank you, Red, for this unbelievable story!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I loved the first book in the duet, so I was going crazy waiting for the send installment of Captain and Candy’s love story/HEA.
This picked up literally as Captain left Candy’s house when he decided not to collar her. He gets some advice from a good friend on what to do with his predicament…he loves her BUT is too old for her.
I enjoyed the dynamic of what Captain does to help guide Candy and help her grow as a submissive. I loved seeing her with a few training center dominants to help her realize 110% Captain is the man for her. I think this dynamic helped Captain also realize he needs the little minx in his life too.
The rest of the book is a lot of retelling of previous scenes we have already seen Candy and Captain in….dinner with Brie and Sir, re-training Mary, the Russian Rescue of Rytsar, etc so I felt that part of the story wasn’t much new information since we already KNEW/UNDERSTOOD how they were feeling in the main Brie storyline.
The end of the book I did enjoy because I think it helped Captain face his demons with his personal life too. He is completely happy with Candy and their life but sometimes you don’t even know you need something until it presents its self to you.
I am excited to see more back story of Sir, Rytsar, and Master Anderson in college. Those will be some fun reads I am sure…unless they show the scene with Mistress Clark and Rytsar….eeeek that could be sad to read.
Destined to Dominate is the continuing story of Captain and Candy. We knew they were destined to be together and this story showed us exactly that. You will find yourself going through numerous emotions as you read through their story. I can say that I was heartbroken, shocked, appalled and down right "mad as a wet hen" while reading about what Captain went through with his family while he was trying to recover from his horrible injuries. I cried and my heart literally hurt while reading parts of this story. Red truly has a gift because even though my heart hurt I knew I would be satisfied by the end of the book. This story had less sexy bits in it but it didn't take away from the story at all. I really enjoyed Candy's scenes with the other Dom's. I found that these sexy bits were perfect for the story and I enjoyed them all.
I also enjoyed learning more of how Captain and Candy helped Brie when Sir was in the plane crash and then recovering. And reading his POV about Rytsar's abduction and rescue was fantastic!!!
All and all, I am completely satisfied with this installment in the series and I look forward to the next installment whether it be about Sir and Brie or any of the other wonderful characters. I'm secretly hoping that a book about Baron is coming soon. :)
Candy had damaged, broken when Captain had given her the strength of self-belief once again Captain had known the pain of rejection and betrayal and in many cases, it would have left that person bitter, resentful and wallowing in self-pity. Even his own family turned away when he returned from the war badly injured, his heart yearning for the brothers he had lost in battle. Although many that see him at first turn away due to his scars he is a beacon in a stormy sea, a figure of hope for those needing a safe haven and also a strict Dom that helps rebuild the trust of both women and men that have had their trust broken, to a submissive this is a heinous crime because this is something they freely give to their Dom/Master. Candy is Captain’s treasured “pet” and she loves him dearly however their age difference causes him concern and he takes it upon himself to ensure her decision is unbiased!!! This was a truly wonderful read the characters as always were so well written, the situations were so absorbing that as usual I found it totally impossible to put the book down until I reached the end, there were plenty of characters from previous books and they all came together as a unbeatable force when required with Captain at the helm. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
I would give this book 3.5 stars. There were a couple things that didn't really resonate with me in this story and I don't believe it had anything to do with Red's writing, I think it mostly has to do with my personal preferences. I have read the whole Brie submission series and seriously adored those books and loved all of the side characters. But for some reason Candy and Captain were two that I didn't feel a connection with. And after reading this duet that hasn't really changed. Don't get me wrong, I did get tears in my eyes in certain spots. But their kink was definitely not my kink and I found nothing sexy about it. Plus I'm not sure about the age difference. I can't imaging being in a relationship with someone 36 years older than me. I am happy with how Red handled that issue from Captain's perspective. He didn't make it easy for Candy. I think my favorite part was when Candy and Tono had their session. I cried right along with Candy. So powerful. So in the end I think it's me and not Red. It just wasn't something I connected with but this will not keep me from reading her going forward.
I was so excited to read the conclusion to the Candy/Captain story and it didn't disappoint. Reading about them all through the Brie's Submission series I always wanted to know more about their relationships and their lives pre-Brie. I loved learning about how perfectly destined they were for each other. The story was so heartfelt, it made me laugh and it made me cry. Their love is inspiring and uplifting. I especially enjoyed when beloved characters from the previous series made appearances and there were a few parallel story instances from previous books, which allowed you to see the story from another perspective and that was tons of fun. I would highly recommend reading the whole Brie's Submission series, but it's not necessary to have read them for this Captain/Candy duet. I've read all of Red Phoenix's books and they never disappoint. If you love a romantic story with a sexy Dominant and deliciously adorable submissive than this book is totally for you. Enjoy!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Must read book and series. This is book 2 of the spin-off series. Captain and Candy's story. The story took me on a very emotional journey. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Captain is such a honorable and loving man of people and animals. He took the weight of the world on his shoulders after the death of his men and didn't feel he deserved someone as special as Candy. He didn't want to hold her back because of there age difference. I love that Candy know what she wanted no matter what Captain did to sway her or point her in someone else direction she know he was the one for her. There love is so special and heartfelt. I love what Candy and her family did for Captain. I love how his life has now come full circle and he can have some peace. Great Job Red Phoenix!!!! You made Captain come to the forefront as one of my new favorites. When are you going to write Byron's story because just his background story touched my heart too!!!
This is Book #2, in the Captain Duets series. I would recommend reading book #1, Safe Haven, as you learn of Captain’s life growing up and coming up through the military life and ranks.
In Book #2, we learn more of Captain and Candy’s past life. They are both accepting of what happened in their past and are ready to move on in the present.
Destined to Dominate is more of a tear jerker Book. If you have triggers about death / loss of life / loss of pets, this book isn’t for you. This book is very touching and moving.
Candy seems to judge / base her relationship with Captain against that of Brie and Sir. I believe they are very different. Candy shouldn’t be judging her relationship against others.
We don’t seem to have the same steamy romance in this book as we have had in other Red Phoenix’s Book. Yes there are some scenes but not as steamy.
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review I am freely leaving.
Destined to Dominate is the 2nd part to Safe Haven. While this is a two part series, there is lot of reference and characters showing up from the Brie Submission series. If you have not read that series, I highly recommend it. But let me not get distracted as this is a review for Destined to Dominate. The book continues exactly where it left off in Safe Haven. It chronicles the journey for Candy and Captain. There is a quite a bit of an age difference between the two and just goes to show that age is just a number. This is a book about two people who are searching to find there way emotionally after suffering losses that are soul deep. Yes it contains some BDSM and erotica scenes but it is so much more of an emotional journey that two people who are willing to try for the one they love. A must read.
So we learn in the 1st book the hardships both Candy & Captain had & what brought them together.. In this one, we learn even more about each person & fall even more in love with them. Then after finally accepting they were truly meant for each other, tragedy strikes in Russia & Captain & 2 others must go to save their comrade. Captain & Candy are put through the test of overcoming obstacles from their age difference to Captain still thinking he's too old for Candy while she has her whole life ahead, etc. I loved this book, & you should have kleenex nearby as you get to the middle of the book because from then on out, there are definitely parts of the story that make you wanna cry happy & sad tears.. loved it from beginning to end & can't wait to start on my next book from her.. Thank you so much for this series & keep up the awesome work, Red Phoenix!!!
This book touched me so much. I feel in love with Captain & Candy in Brie's books. They are my favorite characters & I know I am going to be far-reaching their story more. As you go through their struggles you look at your own. These two are soulmates. Two halves to one love and even their age knows no bounds. After reading the first half of their lives i could not wait for the next chapter. I could not out the book down. In fact I fell asleep reading it last night. This book also gives you another side of the BDSM world people need to see and read. Pick up the book and take a look. You will fall In love with Captain &Candy as well.
I cried at the scene that reminded me of our pup Molly-Emme.
Beautifully written love story. Very emotionally charged book which deals with love, loss and abandonment. Every time you dive into one of Red Phoenix books you are guaranteed to be taken on a journey you won’t forget in a hurry. Love can change us and lead us in a direction we never expected. Loss of an old friend brings not only grief but regret. When forgiveness can’t be given freely and an old wound can’t heal. Captain and Candy’s book is such a deeply emotional story and Red writes it like she does everything else straight from her heart. This story left me breathless and sometimes in tears but it was worth every one I shed, a book that will leave you begging for more. I would definitely recommend this book.
Wow... I was kinda nervous for this duet. (Safe Haven being the first book). But I’m super glad I gave it a chance. Red Phoenix did NOT disappoint. This story I think came together very well. It is a HUGE tear jerker. This story really makes you think about what is important in life, in my opinion. Do you worry about what other people think? Or do you do what makes you happy? Do you give up? Or do you fight for what you want? This story made me want to fight for everything I could ever want. This story has so much emotion that after you read it, you might need to take a day or two to process. I could not believe how much emotion a book could have. I highly recommend to people to read this story.
Once again Red Phoenix captured my heart as she continues Captain and Candy's love story. We meet Mary again, and see her gain a family she never had. Baron reveals his secret plan. Many lives will be changed, for the better Captain serves in the rescue of Durov. One in the rescue party bravely makes the sacrifice to gain their release. As Candy awaits her Captain's return, she keeps her grades up. Candy and Baron continue the project. We meet Brie and Sir again, under less than happy circumstances. Sir and the staff of the Submission Training Center gather once more to support "one of their own".
This is a tender story of redemption, and acceptance. How the love of a good woman can help her Master find peace, again.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a good, but not great, Red Phoenix book about Captain.
For long-time readers of Phoenix, many of Captain’s stories will be familiar. Some are brief, only touching on events from a high-level POV, while others have the more thrilling Red Magic we know and love.
The book would definitely be stronger if high-level stories were weeded out, creating and expanding bits with deeper emotional connections. With Captain’s history, there is a rich ocean to draw inspiration from.
In summary, this is a good book starring Captain. Some parts are kind of meh, while others will tug at you in different places. *wink wink*
How many Doms does it take for Captain to collar Candy permanently?
Captain's Duet continues where we left off in Safe Haven. Emotion runs high with Captain's flashbacks and the way he must overcome his grief and pull together his feelings for Candy. His heart and soul love her, but his mind must seek to cover all courses to make sure he is the perfect Dom for her. In doing so, it's riveting, soul searching in both for himself and Candy.
"Your soul will never be quiet until you fulfill your destiny."
Red has truly done herself justice to these two characters' story. She has brought warmth, love, connectivity, passion and heart in a time of needing for these two. Bounding them and binding them forever.
Red's writing style is intoxicating and emotional. You are able to bond with the characters within. I teared up multiple times through out Captains journey that tissues littered the floor.
*ARC graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*
If you love someone, set them free. If they return to you, it was meant to be.
Destined to Dominate follows that old wives tale. This story shows how true an age old saying can be. As I read the story about Candy and Captain, I continually heard that saying playing over and over again. The further into this book I read, the more Candy and Captain became my friends. I found myself crying and laughing with them. Most of all, I found myself hoping for a happy ending. Candy and Captain take this series out of the training center and into the struggles and triumphs of a loving relationship. This is a wonderful, heart felt love story not to miss!
I received this book as part of an ARC from Red Phoenix. Destined to Dominate by Red Phoenix is a must read. Captain and Candy’s continued story from Safe Haven. This book has so much emotion poured into the characters that you never want it to end. It makes you fall in love with Captain and Candy while including some of the original characters from the other storylines. I have completely fallen in love with Captain and Candy’s beautiful story. Red Phoenix has created an incredible bond between the characters and the readers. You will not want to put this book down until you read it in its entirety.
I must say I have waited for Captain to get his story. Captain is an amazing stand up guy full of courage, loyalty and heroism. Even though he has been through so much heartache & pain it has shaped him in the man he is today. With Candy & his family by his side he is able to accomplish anything, Candy is a strong young woman who is mature beyond her years. She is amazing and strong and her and Captain make the ultimate couple. This story was so full of emotion, you laugh and cry and then do it all over again. Red does an amazing job in telling this story, you can see how much heart and devotion she has into putting Captains & Candy's story together. I'm in awe at how well it turned out!
Destined to Dominate is definitely a story about how "love has no limits" I gobbled this story up in one sitting............thank goodness for rainy Sundays!
The story of Candy and Captain continues and it is from their own points of view. I did worry about the story going over all the other story-lines but i needn't have worried. It was more about them and not repetitive at all.
This was such an emotional read, you can't help but fall in love with both of them. They both have a strength, determination and courage that gets them through their grief and heartache.
OMG! DTD is one of the most exciting, imaginative and heart wrenching books I’ve read! Red Phoenix takes you right there in each scene and wrings out tears and emotion you never knew while giving you a path to heal your own wounds in life. The only down side for the moment is, due to covid19, you may not have enough tissue in the house to absorb all the wetness. I recommend you wear an old sweatshirt to accommodate your emotions. I recommend all her books associated with Brie’s story as having read over 430 books since January 2019 of differing authors, Red Phoenix continues to improve her writing talents and hone her scenario skills.
WOW!!!! Red Phoenix did her job Extermly well as an author. This book left me with raw emotions, but in a good way. There is joy that will make you smile and even laugh out loud. You will be outraged by the injustice and cry because of it. I was heartbroken but had to continue on this incredible journey. Best of all was the tears joy and of closure. I actually yelled NO!!! When I realized I had read the end of the book. Even though there is closure in coming full circle, I was not ready for Captain and Candy's journey to end. I hope to see more of the in the next Brie release.
I read this book in one day because I could NOT put it down! I had to take a few days to recover from my book hangover to write my review. This book was absolutely fabulous!! A great ending to a great story! Captain and Candy compliment each other in such a way, that we all hope to find a love like that! I love how Red always has some of the characters we know and love show up in the other books. If you haven't read Safe Haven you shouldn't read this book as they should be read together. I hope you all fall in love with Captain & Candy's story as much as I did! Well done!!!
