Niko Pirosmani is one of those artists who was not celebrated during their life time. He is a not a very well known Georgian artist out side of Georgia unfortunately. I didn't know about him until he was introduced to me by Ryszard Kapuscinski in one of his books .It is sad that he was not recognized very much during his life time and he had to eke out a living making paintings for the taverns in Tbilisi and died in destitution. He has a unique style and choice of subjects. I read somewhere that he used paints meant for coffins as they are cheap to purchase. A good biography of Pirsomani and I love his naive paintings.
