At the time of its publication this was the first full-length official history of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club to appear for more than 50 years. It was written by a former Sheffield Morning Telegraph sports editor --as, coincidentally, was the previous history, A Romance of the Wednesday, written by Richard A Sparling in 1926.
Left school at 15 with no qualifications, and worked in various positions, mainly clerical, before finally fulfilling his ambition to become a journalist when he joined the Sheffield Telegraph in the early 1960s. He later had a five-year spell as sports editor before quitting in the late 1970s to become editor of an industrial magazine (Quality). From 1985 until 2003 he worked as a freelance, mainly as a football writer for the Daily Telegraph, and published 17 books on football and other local subjects (company histories, biographies, etc). He also published an autobiography, A Sheffield Boy. He retired in 2003, and now devotes his time to reading, studying family history, and painting in watercolour or acrylics. He has compiled a Who WasWho of the Sheffield (Morning) Telegraph, having finished a task started by the late Peter Harvey.
