This book appealed to me because I am older than the average social media user and sometimes feel quite overwhelmed with it at times.
The book, however, helped put a lot of things into perspective for me. It is easy to read with some good illustrations and quotes and one that really stood out for me was "There is no such thing as IRL because it is all Real Life" by Doreen Dodgen-Magee.
As the author suggests, this is a book to dip in an out of especially if you feel social media is getting to you. Social media can have so many benefits but the other side of it can be quite toxic and sometimes its just nice to have a break, reset and start again.
Social media for a new age is really good and educational about not always using social media all the time and to do different things like going outside , hobbies and etc. I really want my daughter to read this because she always in her phone and hopefully this book will let her be kind to heart, mind and soul. This book is like coaching guide to help young people change there mind about social media. I really like the quotes they are very powerful. 5 stars definitely recommend this to children and young teens . Thank you love book tours and Katie Brockhurst for being part of this tour and reviewing this book.
One of the best books I have read on social media in a long time. Very inspiring and a perfect book for anyone with a business or personal brand that believes in a healthy work life balance, self care, transparency and personalisation! Loved it!
So happy to have found this book through the recommendation of Rebecca Campbell. An up-to-the-minute look at navigating social media in today's flood of content. Takeaway? It's not always about the likes and shares but always about the relationship built with your reader/customer/client. Loved it! ♥️
It had some great insights and inspirations for using social media in a new way. I‘d have expected more depth to the topics. For example, at the end of every chapter are at least 3 questions for the reader go more into the topic and think more about it, but I actually expected that a lot of these questions would get answered from the author.

Readers’ Comments ‘Social media is, in many ways, a drug. We all see children addicted to it. And, let’s face it, it’ all going to end in disaster. Sadly, there’s no way Facebook, Twitter, etc. will do anything about it as all they care about is increasing numbers and increasing advertising revenue. Self-regulation is not going to work in that industry. So, a book of this nature is very welcome as the author attempts to educate people to keep social media in perspective and to have a healthy relationship with it. Also, there’s so much in it to help a company have a successful relationship with potential customer.’ Female reader, aged 42 ‘Social media is all about relationships, not clicks and liking stuff. Thankfully, this author knows this and is determined to help. This book is excellent. I would recommend it to anybody who is using social media to expand and develop a business.’ Female reader, aged 52 ‘The best thing with a book like this is that it helps to reduce that horrible guilty feeling you get when you are not up to date with your Facebook account. Social media is important but it’s not ‘life’; not real life. It’s synthetic, often anonymous and is doing a fantastic job is reducing the ability of people to communicate with each other. Read this book. It won’t tell you to desert social media, but it might help you to reassess your relationship with it.’ Female reader, aged 43 ‘Excellent read. Informative, looking at social media from a totally different – and healthy - angle.’ Male reader, aged 44
To Sum It Up: ‘A new, fresh way of looking at social media and how to develop it to work for you. A FINALIST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
Social Media for a New Age is a fantastic anthology of poems, quotes, activities and small reminders, which could easily be used as small gentle daily nudges, or even plotted around the home or the office to remind individuals about the behaviours and thoughts towards social media. I found this to be quite an enlightening and helpful read, with various activities throughout the pages to make the reader evaluate social media, their presence on social media, and just exactly what they are gaining from it.
The two definitions at the beginning of the book were extremely helpful, as it helped to understand further dialogue mentioned in the book, plus it was a nice addition to have an insight into the author and their lifestyle/job change, this also helps the reader to understand the knowledge and experience that the author has.
One of the quotes in the book that really got to me, and I feel a lot of people on social media use is the fact that they apologise for taking time away from social media, as the author so rightly states “stop apologising for time offline” this is so important, especially in modern times with a lot of focus being placed on social media and a number of influencers encouraging certain behaviours and patterns from their followers, it is always important to remember to take time out, as the quote from Doreen Dodgen-Magee reminds us “There’s n such things as IRL because it is all real life”
This is definitely one to read if you feel that you need some time away from Social Media, or if you are becoming more reflective of your social media presence, and screen time, as this book really helped me to understand what I want and what I am gaining from my online presence.
😇 Social Media for a New Age by Katie Brockhurst 😇
AD/PR Gifted - I really liked this little book of wisdom in a world where we are all on social media platforms more, being judged and feeling the urge to compare yourself can be overwhelming as can the impulse to constantly check your platforms for likes and comments, or to post daily as we are told consistency is key if we want to build a following.
There's nothing ground breaking here BUT it is presented in a super cute dip in and out format I really liked just randomly selecting a page and seeing what it told me. I've annotated and coloured in all over the place as well as tabbing pages I found the most useful. As an adult who was a preteen when Facebook was created (showing my age 🙈) I can't imagine the pressure teenagers are under with the numerous platforms they have access to and I definitely feel like this would be a great gift for teenagers and adults alike just so that they have the little voice of Katie telling them it ok to take a break, to not look or post every second of everyday, to not have millions of likes or followers, to not look like or have the same as every other person put there.
I think its really important to get that message out there and this is a great way to do it.
My one negative would be a random one and it that I didn't like the waxy feel of the cover and a couple of my pages fell out after flicking through a few times but saying that they would look great pinned to a notice board so is it really a negative
Book 3 isn’t on good reads yet so this is a review for that one…
What a flash back thinking about the early days of MySpace. A complete guide book that you can use in your own unique way. I’ve never thought about my own well-being before this when it comes to social media but it’s true social media is a cage and your just there in the centre just trying to be you. I absolutely loved the quotes and the illustrations (especially the unicorn)! The poems and the flow are reality checking and get you thinking about the ins and outs of the technology we absorb daily. The mini questions pop out at you allowing you to pause and really think about how you would answer.
The algorithm personally stood out to me and how bookstagram is currently so hard to seek engagement and the amount of people you are having a moan about it too. So for me this book is completely relatable. The layout of the book is incredible and there’s something new on every single page about the world of social media. You can literally pick it up pause and start wherever and whenever you want. I love that the author sees the positive in every aspect of social media where sometimes we may focus only on the negatives.
I love the key message of just be you. Loved this and definitely sharing it with my soon to be 13 year old,.
This really appealed to me as someone who has a bookstagram account and who uses social media alot to conect with other bookish people as well as friends and family etc. Social media is second nature to most of us now and we probbly dont even think about how much time we spend on it or the effects that this could take on us and there were two parts that really resonated with me. The first being the quote "There's no such things as IRL because it is all REAL LIFE by Doreen Dodgen - Magee, and the second being The algorithm is personal, subjective and unique just like you. And life. No one is hving the same exoeriences as you. You have more power than you think.
Social media has really helped me in many ways, I have found a wonderful community through bookstagram and some have become like family, however when used in a certain way it has the ability to become a toxic environment that does more harm than good, therefore this is a perfect read for anyone who uses social media in any way.
I'm not really into self-help books but the notion of a digital age is something that I do have thoughts and feelings on so was interested to read this. There's a lot of very obvious but necessary points that I think many people forget now that social media is second nature to us all. I often say I'm so glad to have grown up in a time without it. No filters or expectations. Used appropriately, social media is a great way to connect with people. I have (virtually) met so many people in online communities who support and guide me in various endeavours and I am so grateful for that, but we must be mindful that it is not the be all and end all. I particularly liked one point in the book that I want to highlight - "there's no such thing as IRL because it is all REAL LIFE. ~ Doreen Dodgen-Magee"
When reviewing a book, I obviously read the book as a whole, front to back. But this book needed more than just that.
It contains some lovely poems, activations and prompts to help you feel better about the overwhelm that can occur when overloaded with social media and being online constantly as we all are nowadays.
Some pieces are humorous, some give you a boost and others really do make you stop and think about what you want to get from your time online.
Read front to back was interesting. But I also, over 2 weeks, dipped into this book whenever I felt the need - flicking through as suggested and stopping randomly on a page to see what that moment brought.
A lovely little book to keep onside for those who, like me, often get frustrated with social media and it's constant expectations.
I was surprised to see poetry in this book. The author uses poems to express her caution about how to use and deal with social media, it’s pros and cons, it’s benefits and disadvantages.
There are a lot of cute pictures throughout the book which makes it more appealing to the younger generation. But there are a few technical jargons and concepts which cater to a bit ya generation.
The thing I got confused by was the spiritual aspect of dealing with social media. I didn’t know about it and couldn’t relate to it.
It’s a good book to understand Social media and it’s algorithms on a very basic level. There were some really nice short poems that I liked about how not to get obsessed with likes or posting everyday
This is one of those books that meets you right where you are.
Social Media for a New Age offers a different way of thinking about visibility, content, and connection — especially for those of us who don’t want to show up online in a forced or performative way.
What I appreciated most is that it doesn’t push formulas or pressure. Instead, it invites you to align your presence with who you actually are and what you value.
Reading this, I kept reflecting on my own relationship with content, voice, and sharing — and how social media can feel very different when it comes from a place of clarity rather than obligation.
It’s thoughtful, grounding, and especially relevant for anyone building something meaningful in today’s online world.
I have had many conversations over the years about how much we rely on and distracted by social media so when I was offered the chance to read this book, I jumped at. Despite seeing the benefits of social media, it is something I feel torn about using. I really liked this book. It has a great message which is really clear. It aligns with my ethos, that social media can be used for good but with strong advisory messages! I loved the illustrations, made it easy to read and take in. My nine year old was also very interested in this so I'll be sharing with her as she gets more into social media, help her balance it all better than me!
