Lewis Byford Patten was a prolific author of American Western Novels, born in Denver, Colorado. Often published under the names Lewis Ford, Len Leighto and, Joseph Wayne.
A sad tale of a family in 1872. The father was a Mountain Man. The mother was a Cheyenne. Both were deeply in love with one another. They have a son that fits in neither world. The real story is here. How can he survive in the white or in the Native American world. This book although relatively short does this and is more of a novella.
I read six Patten books this past month and this was my favorite. He seemed to be at his best when writing about either frontier justice or white/Indian relations, which is what this one is premised on. The plotting here was great. the only part that struck me as kind of silly was when a news reporter conveniently showed up for some serious inconvenience, but the reporter ended up being fleshed out well, as are all the other characters. Lots of wild conflicting emotions among the white sheriff, his half Cheyenne son, and the 'respectable' town folk. Also Patten's usual dose of tension and violence. This one won't bore you if your a fan of westerns
Patten doesn't often produce a really knock-out story but he almost always consistently tells a good one. "A Death In Indian Wells" fits this mold. It's a good solid story with interesting characters. I got caught up in the drama of the tale. I thought the ending was a little bit weak but not bad. Overall, an enjoyable read.
